I would suggest that part of the reason for the religious gender gap is sexism of the past and to some extent the present. Only fairly recently in our history have women attainted the same rights as men (well, technically more rights then men) and they are still struggling with the glass cealing and other problems. Many churches today allow for women leaders, in some form or another. Some female pastors have gained influence, and the congregations themselves seem to be led by women, who organize sunday school for children, fundraising, church outings, and all manner of activities. Plus there is all the charity work church's do. Volunteerism see's higher rates of women than men. Perhaps the combination of interests offered and chance to have some influence in the community is more appealing to women than men due to social reasons.
