The Hobbit!

Given that Jackson and del Toro are working on this movie, and I'm bored at the moment, I decided to start a discussion.:D

Tolkien's books are my favorites of fantasy. They were one of my first loves reading The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit while in grade school.

Here is what I hope. I hope that Jackson and del Toro realize Tolkien's dismay at feeling The Hobbit was still talking down to children and that they can take the story to the same level as LOTR.

Also, since McKellen and Serkis are obvious picks to continue the characters of Gandalf and Smeagol I want to know who members would like to see play Bilbo. My first guess is James McAvoy playing Bilbo.

Also, given the rumors that the movie may be split into two movies what aspects of the mythology could they include. The obvious part would be using Tolkien's writings regarding the efforts of Gandalf and Saruman driving Sauron out of Mirkwood.

There is great potential in this movie but also the possibility of great upset given the success of the LOTR movies and the major differences in writing between those and The Hobbit.

But I'm happy del Toro is on board to direct the movie. I'm a big fan Pan's Labyrinth as well as his other movies.

I also notice that the date of release keeps getting pushed back more and more.

Are they really going to make it?? I remember signing petitions a few years ago saying we wanted The Hobbit made into a film. That's so cool. I hope they really do make it. It, like a second X-Files movie, I had given up on... I waited years for that X-Files movie... but they ended up making it. :D And now I've waited a couple years for The Hobbit... It will be great if they really make it... How sure are you that it will be made??

Why not have the same guy play Bilbo who played him in the LOTR movies?? The Hobbit is one of my very favourite books ever. :D I'll be so egscited to see it if they really do make it. My favourite chapter was when he meat Gollum. Weeeeeee!!

They are going to make it unless there is a fall out with the studios.

Both Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro are working on scripts and casting.

Right now the date is 2012. The first date was 2010 but I'm sure both have current projects or contracts that they are working on.

The International Movie Database and the One Ring websites have information on the movie. Unfortunately, most of the project still seems very early in the works.

2012... wowza. I hope it is before the world ends... :D That's a while, but it will be here before you know it... Geeze... what year is it now? 2009? Yep... Time is flying.

If you like fantasy, of a sort, I would recommend Watership Down directed by Rosen. Based off a Richard Adam's novel it's great movie from 1978. The animation is fantastic.

great movie? 1978? I didn't know those words could all be used in the same sentence... I'll think about it, but I don't usually like movies made before I was born...

It's a great movie. Yes, it's rabbits. One of whom recognizes an end to the warren in which they live and that they must move to a different location in order to survive. In doing so, besides the adventures they have, the rabbits meet another warren with an authoritarian structure.

That's a trailer for the movie. A look upon the animation techniques before the use of computers and a great story.

I dare you to watch it and not shed a tear.

It looks strange and depressing. Maybe I'll look for it at Family Video.

I can't wait for it to come out. And they can't have Ian Holm play Bilbo as he is just too old, there is a similar problem regarding Christopher Lee, he's said in an interview that he would be able to shoot scenes in London, but couldn't stand the 24 hour flight to New Zealand.

And I'm praying that Jeremy Irons gets to do the voice of Smaug

Yes, the Necromancer would add some nice foreshadowing, and tie this story in even more with the LOTR.

If you check it out let me know what you think of it.
It's brilliant. Well worth watching. WD always seemed an allegorical take on Jewish history to me - especially the book.

If you want depressing, get the film version of Adams' The Plague Dogs. Yikes that's a downer.

That's a great film as well. And depressing.
