Our relationship with animals, and the ones we chose to eat vary with our nationality.
The British have an aversion to horse meat, but feed it to their dogs. The French are fond of horse meat. some eastern nations eat dog.
Some people eat insects others will not, the same with shell fish.
The concept of some animals being unclean is strange indeed, when all animals are related in some distant way.
In next week's New Scientist, there will be a feature on "Our strong bonds with animals - It's what has driven human evolution." Could be relevant to the OP.

I'm pretty sure the fact that the more developed animals, particularly mammals, tend to feel pain and emotion and form bonds similar to how we humans (who are also animals) do makes it natural to empathize with them.
I'm not sure. New Scientist online allows some articles to be read in full for free but to read others, you have to be a subscriber. Just have to wait and see next week.
