I maintain a mental satsang. I'm not one for forming relationships with groups of people, only because I had what I look back at now as some less than pleasant experiences. But on the whole, it do think it's important to keep company with people of the same beliefs and values as oneself. My late f-i-l used to say "show me your friends and I'll tell you who you are".

What is satsang, according to you, Ratikala? I ask, because in my experience, it varies. Some groups have formal satsangs (get-togethers for religion) at peoples' homes etc, while a more general defintion is just 'meeting with people, sop in this broader definition, going to temple would be considered satsang. There are also other terms for the same thing.

Satsang is the composition of two words Sat + Sang
Sat means Truth, Sang means Company.

There are only two thing said to be TRUE in the whole fake that is all around, Soul and God / Atma and parmatma, Thus.. the re-union of soul and god is known as true Satsang.

Secondly, Satsang is also said to be the company of any person who is in the unity with God, Such persons are called as Saint,Godman, Guru's, Massiahs, Prophets, Peers, Nabis, Murshde kamil, Faquirs etc.

The company of fake Guru or Saint is not a true Satsang.

I maintain a mental satsang.

I think this is quite common , as true sangha is not asy to find , so many are looking to the pure word of shastra as our sangha .

I'm not one for forming relationships with groups of people, only because I had what I look back at now as some less than pleasant experiences. But on the whole, it do think it's important to keep company with people of the same beliefs and values as oneself. My late f-i-l used to say "show me your friends and I'll tell you who you are".

so true , to be in association with the like minded provides inspiration and support , and where bhakti is involved it is so enjoyable simply to discuss and share .

I hope you feel that we have some true sangha here and can enjoy each others company:camp: and association ,

welcome to our satsang :)

dear vinayaka ji,

What is satsang, according to you, Ratikala?

what is satsang to me ? .....pure association , time spent in the company of those whos focus is upon the lord , time spent prehaps listening to shastra , singing kirtan and sharing in the joy of blessed company .

I ask, because in my experience, it varies. Some groups have formal satsangs (get-togethers for religion) at peoples' homes etc,

yes we do this too , especialy when our guru comes to visit , each family will offer the chance to congregate in a less formal atmosphere so that there is plenty of time to sit and listen the guru will speak on what ever topic he is most inspired to teach often there is kirtan and a sharing of prasad , but can be for many reasons with or without the gurus presence , in which case someone may take the oppertunity to read or lead kirtan , it can be formal or informal , large or small gatherings any where realy just an excuse to talk of higer things and share frendship , it is also an oppertunity to serve others .

while a more general defintion is just 'meeting with people, sop in this broader definition, going to temple would be considered satsang. There are also other terms for the same thing.

yes , in truth any company in which one is inclined towards thinking and speaking of god :namaste

I think its important, then, but its good to be with members of your own sub-sect, samparadaya etc. Then you know you can say anything. There is nothing better than being with fellow sishya of the same Guru. You know exactly where they are coming from, because religiously, you're really in the same mind strata.

yes this is good , of course the company within our own sampradaya is very helpfull to us in our sadhana , but I hope you can also enjoy the company of fellows from other dharmic traditions , I find it wonderfull to exchange understandings of that one truth

I love the line that ghandi made popular ..'Ishwara allah tere namma'....

Hindi
रघुपति राघव राजाराम,
पतित पावन सीताराम सीताराम सीताराम,
भज प्यारे तू सीताराम ईश्वर अल्लाह तेरो नाम,
सब को सन्मति दे भगवान
Transliteration :
raghupati rāghav rājārām,
patit pāvan sītārāmsītārām,
sītārām,bhaj pyāre tū sītārām
īśvar allāh tero nām,

sab ko sanmati de bhagavān
Translation:
Chief of the house of Raghu,
Lord Rama,Uplifters of those who have fallen, Sita and Rama,Sita and Rama, Sita and Rama,
O beloved, praise Sita and Rama,
God and Allah are your names,
Bless everyone with this wisdom, Lord.

Now that all depends. One person's 'exchange of understandings' is another's overt proseltysing. So it really depends. Certainly it should go both ways.

"What? You guys don't sing the arrti song? Everybody sings the aarti song. What kind of temple is this anyway? "

I like to go to 'other' style temples occasionally, yes, but I often feel out of place, and occasionally get accosted. :) But its all good.

welcome to our satsang ,
My pleasure, Ratikala ji. :)
prehaps chinu would like to give us a fevorite bhajan or shabad ?
Ratikala ji, the word BHAJAN is the composition of two words, BHAJ + N
"BHAJ" means run, and "N" means to stop, Thus.. the true meanings of BHAJAN is to stop the "mind" from running in mundaneness, in order to get connection with God.

Yes, that "bhajan" is beneficial which helps our heart to get disconnection from this mundaneness, But people make a big mistake when they start hearing too much of these bhajans, because hearing too much of these bhajans are no more than songs, such bhajans start connecting people with each other, which gives an opposite result to the motive for which they are bing done, too much of these bhajans becomes the reason of connection rather than disconnection from this mundaneness.

Apart from all these bhajans. MEDITAION is also known as Bhajan, which i consider as the highest of all bhajans, which is safe and away from all kind of illusionary tricks of our MIND. :)
