The keys to the kingdom?

What exactly are the "keys of the kingdom". I mean Peter was given them, but then again he was the first one to profess faith. And how do we know that they are passed on to any one human?

13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
14They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." 15"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" 16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ,[b] the Son of the living God." 17Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18And I tell you that you are Peter,[c] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[d] will not overcome it.[e] 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[f] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[g] loosed in heaven." 20Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ. (Matthew 16)

I think this means that Peter was given the authority to make decisions for the nascent Christian community. Later in Matthew the exact same charge is given to all the Apostles, so the authority is given to the community (Church), where two or three gather in His name.

The Keys are a symbol of authority. While the other apostles are given the power to bind and loose(Matt 18:15-20) only Peter(Singular) was singled out and given the "Keys" in Matthew 16:13-19. You will not find the Keys given to any other apostle in scripture. In the Old testament the davidic King had a Prime minister and the kings authority was given to that prime minister(singular) via the "Key of the house of David(Isaiah 22:20-24)". Jesus come to us as the New davidic King(Matt 1:1) and he fullfills this typology in Isaiah and hands his authority to his new daividic prime minister Peter(Matt 16;13-19) for the guindence of the church.

Jesus set up a office of prime minister and that office would naturally pass to the next prime minister down through the ages as history records. Namely Linus was the second Pope.

As a matter of fact if you compare Isaiah 22:20-24 with Matt 16:13-19 you will see that Jesus uses very similar language. Most scholars see Jesus and Peter fullfilling the Isaiahian forshadowing.

Great question! I hope that helps sonofnun. God bless you always

In Jesus through Mary,
Athanasius

Isa 22:22-25
(22) And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
(23) And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house.
(24) And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father's house, the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantity, from the vessels of cups, even to all the vessels of flagons.
(25) In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall the nail that is fastened in the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden that was upon it shall be cut off: for the LORD hath spoken it.
Jdg 3:25
(25) And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

Peter = Stone = Balaam teachings = Murdering, sacrificing, idolatry = will not be tolerated in God's laws.

Yes the Key is, if God sets you free, and a stone of stumbling will be laid; as God is the rock of Salvation, then watch the steps, if something binds.

Isa 8:13-16
(13) Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
(14) And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
(15) And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.
(16) Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.

Mar 11:22
(22) And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

Mar 8:33
(33) But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked (stone) Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

They represent the authority given to a man to act in God's name. I believe they continue to be passed on today, and are held by someone who has exactly the same authority Christ gave Peter. The "rock" upon which Christ would build His Church was the "rock of revelation," which was the means by which Peter was able to know with a surety who Christ was. He was chosen to be the Prophet through whom Christ would direct the institutional Church. He alone would hold all of the keys, which means that he alone would receive revelation that would pertain to the Church as a whole.

The stone (peter) is over as declared,
Yet many go unaware...
With time close at hand
And just as planned,
Don’t you think you need oil,
Rather then sand?....

Reality itself?

Perhaps it points to the fact that heaven and earth are essentially
in the same place.

That key is the authority to spread the Word for salvation. Catholics believe that it is passed to the pope. However, I believe that it can be passed to any one who spreads the Word without being proud of himself, does not brag of his knowledge and gives frubals, err, I mean, kindness to others.:)

Think about what a key does: It gives you access. Since Xy is defined communally, we can assume that the community of the faithful have been given access to God's domain.

First we see jesus, asking peter...who do you think i am...and he said...jesus was the christ.

Then jesus says hes blessed...because the father had revealed it to him.

And then jesus says...he will give him the keys of the kingdom. Which as the 'new' king...he could hand down to any 'prime minister' he chose.

Thats still fine..

Then jesus says peter is a rock (but im thinking that might have been more of a stumbling block?).

When jesus said that on this rock he will build his church I think he meant himself. Perhaps peter thought he meant himself. The reason im thinking peter was a rock, more in the way of a stumbling stone...is because a few scriptures...this is what happens:

21From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!"
23Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

Thats a bit disconcerting. Peter has the keys to the kingdom...which i believe the scribes had the key before...

52"Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering."

They had the key but they were not doing with it what they were suppose to do. Has peter done a better job?

Jesus asked peter....to feed his sheep. Has he? Has he fed them with knowledge or has he kept them in the dark. Not entering and hindering others as well?

Was peter a bit of a religious pirate? (he he pirates and treasure chests with keys)

I hope beter is doing his job...though im a bit sceptical. He did not have a good record at keeping his word, wanted to feel important, wanted power and ....well isnt that what the 'church' has been trying to do/be?

First the 'key' converstion takes place between jesus and peter.

This is what jesus tells peter:

I will give you the keys of the kingdom. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." -

This is what jesus tells his disciples:

18"I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
19"Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."

The 'key' does not feature in the converstation with the disciples.

Then jesus tells the disciples...not adding the part of the key...that he gives them a different kind of authority. He says...where two or three come together in my name, there i am. So this is not two or three people acting on behalf of the kingdom. This is two or three people + jesus acting on behalf of the kingdom.

So peter must be feeling he has some authority because of this key he will/did recieve.

The rest of them must have thought the authority was given to them because when they gather together in his name, there jesus was. In other words, if any descisions were to be made, jesus would be right there with them every step of the way.

Is that what jesus would do with peter...with the keys? Or would peter realy on this key to build a church? Would peter attempt to 'run' the church on his own?

Would peter be so busy being important that he does not do, what jesus asked perhaps even warned him to do...to feed the sheep? Or would peter end up feeding himself and those he chose, producing shephards that are puffed up with knowledge.

I believe that the "rock" is the rock of revelation, the principle by which Peter appeared to have come to know who Jesus really was. The fact that, of all the Apostles were could have responded to Christ's question, Peter was the only one who answered correctly. Jesus pointed out that He had received his knowledge, not from man, but from God. I believe that since He intended to continue to communicate with the Church He was going to establish, even after He'd ascended into Heaven, He knew He needed to pick someone who was sufficiently in tune to be able to recognize the promptings of the Spirit.

Thats a bit disconcerting. Peter has the keys to the kingdom...which i believe the scribes had the key before...
Yes, I guess that would have taken Peter back a bit! We have to keep in mind, though, that Peter was nothing more than one of God's servants. He wasn't perfect and I suppose that the Jesus' chastising him was a good reminder to him of that.

They had the key but they were not doing with it what they were suppose to do. Has peter done a better job?
I don't believe that the keys held by the scribes were the same thing as the keys Jesus gave Peter, but I suppose it's possible to interpret it that way. I think Peter actually did an excellent job of leading the Church. I believe it was those who followed him who messed up. Big time.

Jesus asked peter....to feed his sheep. Has he? Has he fed them with knowledge or has he kept them in the dark. Not entering and hindering others as well?
What do you believe Peter did to keep Christ's sheep in the dark? Just curious.

I hope beter is doing his job...though im a bit sceptical. He did not have a good record at keeping his word, wanted to feel important, wanted power and ....well isnt that what the 'church' has been trying to do/be?
As I said before... Peter was merely a man trying to do his best. He undoubtedly made mistakes, but my feelings are that you're being a bit too hard on him.
