Five reasons why being kind makes you feel good – according to science

Of course, you don’t have to scan brains to see that kindness has this kind of benefit. Research in psychology shows a link between kindness and well-being throughout life, starting at a very young age. In fact, even just reflecting on having been kind in the past may be enough to improve teenagers’ mood. Research has also shown that spending extra money on other people may be more powerful in increasing happiness than spending it on yourself.

But why and how does kindness make us so happy? There are a number of different mechanisms involved, and how powerful they are in making us feel good may depend on our personalities.

Here is a list of books & sites about kindness & helping others - I can recommend the art of happiness but haven't read the others ...

For example -

Kindness stories - dozens of them -

As part of a club at school, my daughter has to do Community Service. We had been talking about different ways to fulfill it. She eventually decided to do one her friend suggested last night.

She said that they had packed bagged meals for needy people. She was so proud that they did 5,132!!!

Cool news is that apparently they now do it on a somewhat regular basis. She had thought as she was packing - Wow, mom would really love to do this! That made me happy. Even better was she asked me to go back with her sometime!

Another story -

I was dropping my mom and sister off at the train station after their holiday visit. On the way I saw a man in a wheelchair in an empty lot. It looked like he wasn't wearing shoes.

After dropping off my family, I went back to the lot and he was there. His chair was on the incline that lead to the street and it looked like he was struggling with his bare foot to keep from sliding into the street.

I asked if he wanted me to pull him back up. He nodded. I asked him to pick up his feet and pulled him back up into the lot. He didn't respond when I asked if this was far enough. Then, I opened the box I had brought with me. It was a shoe box with an old pair of shoes that I had kept in my car in case I found someone in need.

Look what I received in the mail today! I've been kindsprung by a fellow kindspringer:). A few were made by dear Jeramiah, who recently transitioned into his next life. Others were made by his caring, beautiful and thoughtful mother, known to us as painiacs:). I will be looking to find a permanent home for these. What a joyous way to remember and honor Jeramiah!

“You know those little moments when an unexpected act or a spoken word affects your heart with sweet, satiating intensity―a simple gesture that possesses deep, personal meaning beyond what anyone realizes? You know those tender moments? That's God pressing his lips on your forehead and whispering, 'I love you.'” - Richelle E. Goodrich-

“I like Kindness it's something the Government can't tax and it's free to give away that will return to you some day” - Stanley V. Paskavich

“Yes, of course we could all use some help. There isn't a person alive without a need. So don't ask the silly question, just figure out how you're going to help and do it!” - Richelle E. Goodrich-

There are a myriad of things the world could benefit from having more of. Kindness is one of them. When you are a kind person, you're not only helping others, you are helping yourself, too. There's substantial scientific evidence that being kind makes you -- and others around you -- happy.

In a study conducted by Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky, psychology professor at University of California, Riverside, students were assigned to do five random acts of kindness per week for a period of six weeks. At the end of the study, the students' levels of happiness had increased by 41.66 percent. Being kind had a profoundly positive effect on happiness.

“We change the world a little each day with our kindness.” - Tom Giaquint-

“The intimacy that arises in listening and speaking truth is only possible if we can open to the vulnerability of our own hearts. Breathing in, contacting the life that is right here, is our first step. Once we have held ourselves with kindness, we can touch others in a vital and healing way.” - Tara Brach-

From a recent email -

I was asked what kindness is during an interview a few weeks ago. It’s something I’m rarely asked as most of us assume we know what kindness is.

So I’ve turned it around and since asked a few groups what they think kindness is. The answer I receive the most is about doing helpful things for people, like acts of kindness.

That is absolutely a huge part of what kindness is, but I think we should also remember that there is much more to kindness than this. Kindness is also in how we think about people, whether we judge people in our minds, or the conversations we have with people in our minds that might not be so kind sometimes.

“I have a very simple philosophy of life:

Kindness. Ferocious, unrelenting, ruthless, committed, passionate, kindness.

Life is sacred everywhere. We all have better things to do than beat each other up.

Arguing for the exception is to invest it with energy, it's to negotiate the loophole. The commitment to kindness must be total.” -David Gerrold-

“We must be kind and gentle gardeners with people and nature.” - Bryant McGill-

Thanks for sharing - I like the idea of ferocious kindness! :)

A little search led me to these quotes - some are probly NOT in this thread somewhere ...

Humanity 101 - kindness | Project Humanities

"Your greatness is measured by your kindness; your education and intellect by your modesty; your ignorance is betrayed by your suspicions and prejudices, and your real caliber is measured by the consideration and tolerance you have for others."

William J.H. Boetcker

I thought it was a typo but I read it again and it makes sense - mentioning education and modesty ...

Cheers!
