The Kindness Box

Spirit library love (Ann Albers) -

Love animates the very core of our being and simultaneously permeates every aspect of our existence. This fundamental energy vibration brings meaning to life, sustains us through the most difficult challenges, and lifts us into the most profound joys. We seek it in countless ways during our everyday experiences and feel it deeply when fully connected to this primal life-force energy. We know it in the many qualities it brings to us, for example as kindness, compassion, forgiveness and inner peace. Alas, for most, it remains an elusive and externally sought expression while we silently crave its constant presence in our heart-of-hearts.

We are born in a body with animal instincts, we carry the baggage of past lives (it seems) and to add to this we develop survival solutions upon the lines of our racial culture, and according to our particular upbringing and experiences. This is a complex and tangled mixture but it is possible to separate out these strands and to find our true identity. With this knowledge we can transform our minds - and that is the prerequisite to fundamental change for the better.

Try love first.

Most people are doing the best they can from their level of consciousness. We are all in this together and at our core, we are basically good.

Hatred and anger cannot wipe out hatred and anger. But, sometimes love and understanding can.

I was always waiting for an apology or a change in behavior from the other person. Sometimes it has to begin with you. Sometimes, you have to accept the fact that the other person may never change.

What is hurting you most is your behavior toward them. Changing that will help you feel better.

Resentment will poison you from the inside. Forgive the other person for yourself. Let the anger go.

Amazingly, sometimes that also changes the other person. But, you have to go first.

Love is worth a try. Give it a shot.

Palacio kindness -

Five years ago, R.J. Palacio introduced us to Auggie Pullman, the hero of her phenomenal book, Wonder. As a young boy with a severe facial deformity attending school for the first time, Auggie’s story of unwavering compassion and friendship has inspired millions of readers to “choose kind”. Palacio’s powerful message has also inspired a collection of books around Auggie’s story, most recently a picture book for young readers, We’re All Wonders. We were thrilled to chat with R.J. about the idea behind the new picture book, the impact the Choose Kind movement has had on her life, her favorite precept, and the books she loved reading to her children.

Kindness encourage others -

As parents, we do our best to teach our children to choose kindness above all else. We teach them to treat others as we would want to be treated. Despite our best efforts, this may not always happen. They are only kids after all. They are learning their place in this world and how their behavior impacts others. I have quickly learned that having boys comes with its fair share of fighting, yelling and snarky comments. I do my best to teach them compassion, empathy and kindness but, ultimately, they will learn from their own experiences.

Teaching kindness goes beyond caring for others, it also includes caring for the Earth and all its creatures. Pick up trash on the walk around the block or develop a good recycling system that kids can help out with at home. There are small opportunities like this in every day that have a large impact, and help demonstrate kindness toward the Earth.

Children's Books That Encourage Kindness Toward Others

What It's About: This book introduces an idea that everyone has an "invisible bucket." These buckets are used to hold your good thoughts and feelings about yourself. When you do something kind, you help fill someone else's bucket.

Why It's Important: This provides kids with a visual representation of the importance of kindness. It focuses on social interactions and how our actions positively or negatively affect other people. This book would be especially beneficial as kids begin to develop empathy towards others.

The only rule in my class is, “We are all friends.” We began the year by creating a chart that shows what a friend can do, what friends will do and what friends like to do together. The discussion was amazing during the charts creation. We talked about what kindness looks like in a classroom. For example, friends can help you sharpen a pencil, but they can also help you play games or read with you. I also model what a conversation looks like. Friends need to listen to each other and take turns talking.
