I have to crank my cpu cycles down or my computer overheats and shuts off. I hope I don't have to replace the paste under the cpu. I do not have confidence to do it without breaking anything.

all it needs is an even coating that covers it, not a large glob or a thick coating. But it as to be even or overheating can occur
