Winning after planning my Texas trip (to & from).
Google Maps & Garmin could both be easier to use & more reliable.
Still, it beats the old days..

True but I remember fondly AAA "triptik" note about speed traps, "strict enforcement", warnings. They saved me money.

I like maps and written directions...all this new fangled, making it easy for everyone is sissifying the nation..... ok...actually I am not a big fan of Google maps, it has been known to be INCREDIBLY wrong at times....and my first GPS was trying to kill me.... my current GPS sits in the glove box most of the time and I rarely use it.... although I did use it once about a month ago. But I will admit, while on vacation in foreign lands like Californiastan, Nevadastan, Floridastan and Arizonastan....my wife's iPhone, which may be using Google maps, not sure there, has been incredibly helpful and has not once tried to kill me

My GPS once told me to turn right and drive though a parked car and down a park hill. I won by ignoring it

I remember the bad old days too....dealing with a navigator
(& fearing for my marriage)...or traveling alone, & forgetting turns.

GPS devices are variously murderers, incompetents, & practical jokers.
But try driving thru Connecticut alone without one....dange interchanges going in every which direction!
And once a I-94 shut down for many miles due to some hazmat spill.
Try taking back roads at night using dead reckoning to parallel
the highway until it opens up again. Interesting times.

My old GPS told me to take a let turn off a bridge that was over another highway where the was no road
Told me to take a right into someone's house
Told me to take a right into a rather large Oak tree
Told me to take left into a rather large building
And in New Jerseys, at the merger of 2 major highways told me to take a right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left

It was either the GPS or me.... so I got rid of the GPS

My GPS in New Jersey got me in a loop where I think it was hoping I'd run out of gas and die.... it continued to tell me to take a right where the road was under construction and closed so I'd try to find my way around...it kept taking me back to that same dang closed road. I finally convinced Mrs Wu to shut the dang thing off because it had no idea where we where...she wanted me to follow it blindly, but after 4 times around she finally agreed. However this was my 2nd GPS and I discovered that it may have simply been as confused as everyone else in the area, because I asked multiple people and a few guys that worked at gas stations how to get to the road I wanted to get to and none of them knew either. So I followed the cars compass to eventually get me to the road I wanted

It's important to regularly update your GPS software.

I know, I had updated it just before the trip.

And that guard rail reminded me...my first GPS, which was also updated.... wanted me to drive through one of those on a closed highway.....but I am certain...that GPS...wanted me dead

What brand of GPS do you use?
Rand McNutty?
Harmin?
Majellin?

Sometimes when I go someplace, the person I'm visiting
will warn me of some GPS issue in finding them.
Btw, I use a Garmin Dezl 770.
And I always plan my route ahead of time, shaping it to
suit my needs, eg, minimizing tolls, avoiding bad roads,
avoiding stairs.
