I'm impressed but I'd probably be more impressed if I knew who Wallace and McGovern were.
Wallace was a segregationist governor and ran for president... McGovern was a liberal Senator..who also ran for the American presidency.

I think people feel the federal government has a direct influence on their lives. I've always felt government has an indirect influence on my life. Those owning businesses have their own perspective I imagine. Medical providers, another view perhaps....etc

As a retired person who expects money to show up in my checking account every month on time, the influence on my life is direct in that and other ways (Medicare).

I do actually see the gov. as an indirect influence on S/S because they act as brokers....true, they can set standards for S/S....
Social Security is financed through a dedicated payroll tax. Employers and employees each pay 6.2 percent of wages up to the taxable maximum of $147,000 (in 2022), while the self-employed pay 12.4 percent.
