My polov had no gourd. This one had carrot, chick pea, and vegetarian beef substitute. (And a bunch of spices.) The recipe I had vvas from Tajikistan. It can vary some by region.

Who ever came up with the idea that rasins steeped overnight in brandy, honey and strong black tea make a wonderful loaf when mixed with bread flower, brown sugar and marmalade. A rousing cheer for Yorkshire tea loaf
