Not often at all anymore. And typically less than a minute. Maybe once or twice a year.
This one scared me because it wouldn't stop. The first one lasted near 3-4 minutes, and anytime I'd move, it would start up again. This went on for near a half hour.
It depends on what is the cause. When I have afib, even for 20 seconds, I can hear the irregular heart beat but it's not "palpitations" from a medical perspective. Flipping into concern and looking it up mode:
Palpitations are common and usually harmless, but they can sometimes be a sign of a more serious condition. You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience palpitations along with any of the following symptoms: Chest discomfort, Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, Dizziness or light-headedness, Fainting, and Nausea.
To treat palpitations at home, you can try to avoid triggers, such as:
- Caffeine
- Nicotine
- Some cold medicines
- Energy drinks
- Illegal drugs, like cocaine and amphetamines
- Stress (yeah, well, it's trivially easy to write that but be in your shoes for a minute or a day)
