The Lord of the universe is ill again.

The Lord of the universe, Jagannatha of Puri, is ill again due to excessive bathing that he is made to undergo. He has fever, headache and a running nose. He is being treated by doctors with various medicines (Kadha - extract). He is being given fruit juice, fruits and hot milk before he goes to sleep. He is at his aunts place, on leave for 15 days. I wish him quick recovery.

Who is his auntie, @Aupmanyav ?
Goddess Ardhashini Devi. It is said that once when the sea was invading Puri, the Goddess drank half the sea water and saved the city. I think, it refers to a ancient tsunami or typhoon (common in that region) which did not damage Puri much.

"As per Jagannath mythology, once Goddess Lakshmi Devi left Shri Mandira, and thus Jagannath and Balabhadra becomes poor and had to go out begging. When Jagannath and Balabhadra were out during that time, Subhadra Devi was staying at Mausi Maa's place (Maternal Aunt)."

During the illness of the Lord, while going to their place of rest, Gundicha temple (Garden of the God), and while coming back after getting well in ten days, the deities stop and pay their respect to Mausi Maa (literally mother's sister), Ardhashini Devi.
(Check for details in Wikipedia)

* Kindly note, 'Mausi Maa' could even be a friend of the mother or a women respected like a mother but does not necessarily mean a blood relation,. So Ardhashini Devi need not be a real sister of Mother Devaki. In Bengal, all women of one's mother's age will be referred to as 'Mausi Maa' in that locality. Like all males of the village around fathers age in Haryana will be referred to as Tau (Paternal uncle). This is how people are commonly addressed. :D

If only a tribal God could be Lord of the Universe just because he is named Jagannatha. The Lord of the Universe is Sri Krishna. He is being worshipped like a tribal god too for who can believe that the Supreme Lord can fall ill.

Jagannatha Puri Rath Yatra happening now: Rath Yatra 2017 Live Streaming from Puri
It is a long and slow process. They have not started yet. The idols have not come to the rathas. It will go on till late in the evening. It is raining there adding to the fun. When it is hot, people are sprayed with water. We had a Satyanarayan puja at our place today.
Jaya Jagadeesh Hare.

People are always looking for a God to worship. Some even say that Lord Jagannath is one of the Das Avatars and is a Vaishnavic incarnation. Others say that he is Sri Krishna after the retirement of Sri Krishna he has come to rest in Puri. I do not think that Sri Krishna has ever retired from looking after the universe and is not keen to be worshipped in the way Lord Jagannath is worshipped.

Good for you, @Shantanu, but that hardly prevents others from worshipping him as they feel inclined to.

No doubt, that is our Hinduism in which we have our own individual conceptions of reality. Some Hindus even think of Jesus and Allah as deities in the Hindu conception/pantheon. Although I have debated this point I do not rule it out now. If people worship a God or gods, they exist in the subconscious that I call the guna consciousness triad ( rajasic, sattvic or tamasic) or as the Supreme Lord who transcends the gunas. We surrender to the Supreme Lord out of reverence and awe. We do not worship him as Lord Jagannath is worshipped with rituals. We consult the Supreme Lord for guidance.

Shantanu ji, of course Lord Krishna will never retire from looking after the universe, He is our sole refuge. But what is it that you do not like about the way Lord Jagganath is being worshipped? When one accidentally breaks a murthi, he is very sorry and becomes saddened, like he has physically hurt the Lord. Just so the devotees take Lord Jagganath a break because of over showering. They care for Him, they do not want His beautiful form to tarnish. By the way, Lord Jagganath is Lord Krishna, and is worshipped along with Balabhadra (Balarama) and Subhadra. It is all leela, as Devichaaya said. Our cerulean jewel lets us care for him, just like how he let Yashoda care for him :)

Until yesterday I thought I best give the benefit of the doubt that Lord Jagannath is Lord Krishna, but the litereature was so confusing that I asked God (Sri Krishna) in my usual way of using a digital clock for advice on this point and He categorically did not wish to be associated with Lord Jagannath of Puri. I am going by that guidance because it is an essential spritual practice for me as my own way of surrendering to God by such consultation. That is my faith in satya-advaita or truth accommodation in which God is the source of the ultimate knowledge. Call me a fool if you like but I am not giving this practice up. I personally have nothing against anyone worshipping God or any gods in any way that the person chooses and feels that God or god will be happy with that kind of worship. But I now have nothing to do with Lord Jagannath as a result of this consultation.

It's all leela, @Shantanu. The Lord pretends to fall ill so that His devotees can lovingly care for him.

Heck, we're still helping pay back the loan for his wedding! What kind of interest rate did Kubera charge him!? (if there was a Hell, I'd be soooo going there :D).

Well, he shouldn't have had such an expensive wedding, should he? ;)

The article points out that since Ma Lakshmi was insistent and keen on marrying Lord Vishnu, he could have talked her out of the extravaganza for something a little more reasonable. But I dunno... some brides, there's no reasoning with them.

:D
