The man who introduced mindless consumerism.

His name is Edward Bernays. Freuids nephew.

I started thinking about this in light how putrid, tasteless and bland Mcdonald's food has gotten at extravagant prices and people still keep on buying their garbage in droves with no signs of stopping.

I'm actually deprogramming myself with some success to break the brainwashing, and am wondering if you yourself feel the compulsory need to keep buying garbage products that deep down, you question why you keep going back for more?

A bonus question if you think you've been , or are being brainwashed by corporations in general to keep mindlessly buying things?

I realized I don't like restaurants.

Initially, I stopped going at the beginning of the pandemic. After going so long without, I can't see why I'd go back...

The food is full of fat and grease. I'm not complaining for health reasons, I'm complaining for yuck reasons. There is a limit on these things, and after a point you can't taste your food anyore.

It seldom leaves you full. You can get a restaurant meal, be stuffed, and then be ready to eat again in an hour or two. I suspect MSG plays a role here.

Variety is limited, especially for a vegetarian. The dishes I can create at home are endless.

I can make that **** better myself, in most circumstances.

There is a lot of marketing to make restaurants look irreplaceable, but they're not. (But keep going, 'cause my husband's a chef. :D )

If you watch commercials, you're being brainwashed. Even Daniel Kahneman - arguably the world's leading authority on brainwashing -
admits he's susceptible to brainwashing.

You just have to avoid it.

This in turn goes for anything else you watch not just announcements.

I boycott Amazon, and don't buy from FB advertisers. I do try to maintain a certain standard of life so I can enjoy things, but avoid consumerism. I think the point is being able to maintain a standard of life that you can pay for versus going into to debt to have.

I scan the commercials to see if there are any hot chicks, and if there there are, I tend to forget what the commercial is about.

I remember going home from work I oftentimes get a very powerful compulsion to just buy something on the way. It's almost ingrained in my psyche that I absolutely must do it. I must buy something. It made me wonder what's programming me to habitually spend on a daily basis.

So far now, I've been able to reduce that compulsion significantly to just 1 or 2 times a week from 5 to 7 times a week. I'm making more things from home now, and saving quite a bit of money as a result.

When I worked, I did that, too.

It's called advertising but it's not just corporations. Many segments of the media use the same techniques to keep people glued to their channel. Politicians are no different than corporations either.

Bernays was an absolute genius in his field. He could sell a double bed to the pope and a fridge to an Eskimo. He invented "American culture". Bacon and cereals for breakfast? - Bernays. Engagement ring with a diamond? - Bernays. Women smoking? - Bernays.

Personally, I always had an aversion against advertising. It is loud, it is penetrating, it often is untrue and I don't like being manipulated. All the tactics sales people usually successfully use make me feel uneasy.
Which puts me at an disadvantage when it comes to selling things or myself. I can't use those tactics.

The same goes for religious manipulation. Clergy brainwash their followers into believing only they will go to heaven. This brainwashing has kept the clergy in a job for thousands of years. They will NEVER say another religious ‘brand’ is good or true. That’s the way priests advertise their product to the gullible and naive who lap these ego treats up like candy.

Probably the hardest task today is getting people to ‘think for themselves’ because they have come to enjoy manipulation so much.

I have avoided viewing or listening to all advertising for much of my life - seeing such as gross intrusions that I don't want or need - and where this makes for a more peaceful existence. Who wants to be driven or influenced by others rather than what one generates from within - and especially as to frivolous nonsense all too often? Much the same goes for much of music or other entertainment media and where mostly nothing is gained from such other than wasting a certain amount of time.

Calling advertisement "brainwashing" misses the mark by a mile and actually obfuscates what's going on with our brains in these situations. Compulsive behavior is not caused by "mindlessness" or "brainwashing", it is a habit formed by repetition and lack of resistance to certain impulses.

Advertisement can't actually cause this compulsive behavior, at least as far as all the evidence I've seen goes. What it does, is shift our existing values to associate them with certain behaviors, effectively creating an artificial form of peer pressure, which is a force that we as social animals are intrinsically vulnerable to. But advertisement is only a part of an entire social environment of consumerism; it didn't create our consumerist habits, and it didn't "brainwash" us into following them. At its absolutely most impactful, it manages at best to hook into our existing desires and points them towards certain habits and products. The rest is a social environment that associates material goods with happiness and status - an attitude which, if we look at archaeology, has been part of human civilization since its very dawn.

Totally weird, to me, is the popularity of
McD in HK, one of the worlds greatest cities for foodies!

One block by the Star Ferry in Kowloon
has TWO on the same block.

Or imagine McD as a wedfing venue.

I think there is an element of instant gratification that demands we buy things we don't need, run into debt because we can't wait to save up to buy. Same with junk food that does our bodies more harm than good. Many have learned to become more sophisticated cooks with healthy food source, my daughter uses 90% plant-based foods along with sea foods, occasionally enjoys a good steak. And with today's inflation saves money.
