The Media and Responsible Sex?

Is most of the sex depicted in the media these days irresponsible sex? If so, is the irresponsible sex depicted in the media a factor in the high rate of problems with sexuality that our society experiences?

Would anyone care to speculate as to why the media is much more likely (assuming it is) to depict irresponsible sex than it is to depict responsible sex? Is it because the media is in the business of entertainment, and irresponsible sex is more entertaining that responsible sex? Or is there some other more plausible explanation?

The entertainment one sounds pretty plausible. Let's face it, shows and movies with lots of gratuitous sex attract lots of viewers, which means more $$$. Personally I don't find shows like Sex and the City or Desperate Housewives entertaining, but they're extremely popular.

Most of the sex portrayed by the media (ie porn) is responsible sex. Not harming anyone. Benefitting society immensely. Yep its all good.

and they're popular because they appeal to "vices" and show characters doing things we, or most of us, wont do.

People use the media to get away from real life. They want to be a part of other people's lives and the marketing people at the media companies must have figured out that people who watch their movies/shows and listen to their music don't want to see responsible sex.

It may also be a reflection of the values of those who are producing, writing, directing, and distributing the material. There is plenty of "clean" media, but it has a much more targeted appeal so it doesn't get the attention that other media receives.

Responsible sex is defined as what? Missionary style only. Inside a marriage only? For the purpose of procreation only?

Geez, my own sex life is more interesting than that. If I can't watch something on TV or in a movie that is more interesting than what I have going on, then why would I bother watching it?

Same with violence, humor etc. . . If I watch a "funny" movie, and it ain't any funnier than the conversations I have at the water cooler, I turn it off. Same with sports. I don't want to turn on the Mav's and see a bunch of slow short white guys playing "H-o-r-s-e". I get to see that in a couple days after Thanksgiving dinner.

How many of us have been in a real life car chase? Not many I would guess. But we love to see such things on TV. Exciting stuff. The sex you see on TV and movies is the same thing. It has to be more interesting than what is going on for the average citizen (i.e. it has to be more lascivious) or there would be no reason to watch.
