The Messiah

It's something active, not passive-- not just what there is not, but what there is. Yes, I would want no wars. Yes, I would want no one to be poor. No one to be homeless. No one to be downtrodden in any way.

But I would want more than just tolerance. I would want people to respect one another, and take delight in one another-- including each other's differences-- as beings made in the image of God. And I would want to see spiritual development, a move by people to try every day to elevate themselves in holiness.

I would want to see the muting of materialism and aimless secularism and the rise of people-oriented values and dedication to positive religious practice or otherwise enriching philosophy and introspective discipline.

If everyplace on earth were more like Denmark in respect to social political philosophy, it might be a notable step in the right direction, but it wouldn't be tikkun olam.

It will never happen.

i believe it will most certainly happen in the way Levite described...just not by the means he described.

the sort of change he describes can only come at Gods hand...not mans.
I don't want to poop on your dreams, I just don't believe we will ever get rid of war.

no, we will never achieve that, absolutely agree.

however, God can and promises to do so. How? By forcefully removing all those who wish continue in war with their neighbor.

Has he done so in the past? Yes he has. The nation of Isreal in the promised land was a fore-gleam of what he would do on a earthwide scale. Its only a matter of when.

I think that is achievable in our lifetimes. Democracies rarely make war on other democracies. If the only two countries in the world were Denmark and Taiwan, there would be no thought of war at all. Denmark and Taiwan are not magical unrepeatable countries. They are commonplace. We can make them universal in our lifetimes. All Obama needs to do is nod his head and most of it can be achieved with the US military. A once-off cost of war and then there will be peace. Tantalizingly close. And by the way, various countries have disarmed already, e.g. Haiti and Iceland (the world's oldest democracy by the way - more than 1000 years).
