I am convinced that metal is an attitude more than anything else. Let me prove my claim:

The original version of Canon is not much metal...

Metal is the character and sound. Actually there are two main types - it can be dark or energetic (or something in between).

The tonality is mostly minor although there are exceptions (power metal).

Base structure is riff. There has to be something repetitive. Also repetitions on the same tone and lower tones are welcome...

Distortion is also an important aspect. In classical music we don't hear much of it. The sound is mostly clean. Some instruments can sound close to distortion...

I agree. That is nowhere near the original intent, but if you listen to it that piece is transformed by the players into a piece of metal. If one can turn the Canon into a piece of metal then you could probably turn almost any piece into it

Yes, you can turn almost any classical piece into metal. But some classical compositions just beg for it. Some are kind of proto-metal.
