To me it's just Californiastan.
It's managed in a fashion that makes it spendier
than it need be, especially for new arrivals (who
pay a much higher property tax) & poorer folk.
But it's great for the uber wealthy, who can
manage the high costs without batting an eye.

California has had better days, to be sure. Nobody knows the way to San Jose.

They were probably spoiled by their own success. It is a nice state, good climate, and - at one time, there was lots of open land. Lots of people moved in.

Deaf person found guilty of not listening. Sentenced to 6 months in prison. I SAID SENTENCED TO....
Nearly beaten to death because he just doesn't listen.
Even though the cops had info he's "hearing impaired".
It's all these cops know....to beat people...to rip arms
out of sockets...break bones...concuss brains...shoot.
And they laugh at the man they nearly killed for
being deaf.
The DA declined to prosecute the victim....only because
of the cost of hiring an interpreter. The taxpayers paid
him $175,000. The cops investigated themselves, &
found no wrongdoing.

It's also illegal to be autistic, mentally ill,
elderly, young, & minding your own business.

Who decides the cost of housing?
Not certainly the Californian government.
The market does. Both providers & customers
compete....it's supply & demand. Don't they
have that in Italy?
But there are externa influences, eg, regulating the
size of housing units, government fees to build,
restrictive zoning laws, water restrictions.

Profit maximization.
I see.

In my vision the State should have the control of the prices of housing to enable anyone to afford it.

Profit maximization.
By the business.
And price minimization by the consumer.
It's a dance.

If the cost exceeds the price, then no housing would exist.
Government responds to voter demands, not to reason.
So it shouldn't be trusted too much with regulation.

A government can certainly influence housing pricing through its regulatory arm and that can be a major problem, and actually is in areas.
An example....
Excerpted....
George Sheetz, a construction veteran, faced a $23,000 “traffic impact mitigation” fee when seeking a building permit for his retirement home near Lake Tahoe.
He sued the county, arguing that the fee was disproportionate to the impact of his project on roads.
The case has reached the Supreme Court, with Sheetz and his attorney contending that the fee is unconstitutional and unfairly burdens new development applicants.

Note that this doesn't include building permit fees,
& building inspection fees.
Here in MI, a remodeling contractor I use says that
25% of his prices are for building permit expenses.

You have it backwards.
Californiastan regulation prevents low cost housing.

And that's what happens when democrats are firmly in control of the government.
But CA residents will still vote democrat. They never learn. They simply vote the way they're instructed to.

Republicans also impose housing
regulations that harm. Just less so.

I've observed that one of the biggest problems
being poor is that liberals demand that their
housing be of a quality that meets all housing
codes, building codes, & zoning laws. This
eliminates much functional housing, & leaves
them homeless. But at least virtue has been
signaled.
I'm a fan of shacks, RVs, tiny houses, tents,
& whatever they do when government fails
them. Provide services, not prohibitive
regulation.

Providing jobs by not providing incentives for mass theft would be a good start. When incentives to steal exist, theft happens, and then retailers close up and go elsewhere. Jobs are then lost rather than created. The poor remain poor.

When government provides no protection,
responsibility falls on the individual & businesses
to protect themselves. What a can'o worms.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
So, how would you help the homeless?
By giving them some dignity like people have done in the past before the left wing jack boots come roaring in to tear it all down.

One guy tried to help them by building small houses for the homeless the left wing says nope you can't do that.

Another time a restaurant owner tried to give free perfectly good food to the homeless , the left wing comes trouncing in and says nope you can't do that.

I would help the homeless first by getting rid of these idiotic regulations that prevent people from helping the homeless in the first place.

It is unquestionably true that NIBY often derails projects to help the most vulnerable.

I am happy to see that you, in this thread, are not out to simply demonize our brothers and sisters in need of a hand up.

Their sacred codes are more important than
people having a comfortable safe place to live.
