I looked on the map.
There is a thin continuous band of occupied land between them.
But Perhaps the author is imagining something a century from
now.....or is smoking crack.

Bosnia & Washington DC?
Chicago & Detroit are darn far apart, with little urbanization in between.
(Sasquatch once lived near the MI-IN border, but found it too rural.)
Cleveland is doing well, but Detroit is evaporating, not even reaching
Toledo.

But even in the 60s & 70s, Detroit was in major decline.
