The Slow Quiet Death of Hong Kong

As someone with family from Hong Kong, it's so sad to see what is happening to Hong Kong. The British made Hong Kong into the "Pearl of the Orient". A thriving city state with a booming economy and a vibrant democracy. The evil, genocidal, terrorist CCP turned it into a dumpster fire where people have to fear for there lives if they don't agree with the CCP. Under British government, everybody had a house. Every family was guaranteed a two-bedroom apartment and was even distributed food if you made under a certain amount. Today up to 80% or more live in coffin homes and only party members can afford basic needs like housing, healthcare, groceries, and education.

We can't forget how during 2019, thousands of innocent civilians were gunned down or kidnapped to concentration camps for protesting against CCP's tyranny.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.

Hong Kong used to be at the top of the freedom index for a long time until the Communists started reigning them in once the British let go and left those people out to dry.

Britain had Hong Kong on a 99 year lease. There really was no alternative other than letting go.
I have a PhD in Asian History and Language. One thing about the Chinese language is that the numbers "9", "99" and "999" and so on are often used figuratively to mean indefinate especially when used as time expressions. So the expression "9 hours" for example is often used to mean "All Day Long". Also the treaty was signed between the Qing Dynasty (a non-Chinese dynasty that no longer existed by 1997) and Hong Kong was never a part of that State anyways it was in dispute and the Qing gave up there claims. International law clearly states that if a state is defunct by the time a treaty expires then that territory get's to decide. Most people in Hong Kong wanted to be an independent city state.

China's occupation of Hong Kong is just that an illegal military and political occupation that actually should be condemned by the entire world.

You may well be right. My main point however was that Britain could not have done anything about it and I still say that.

The British rule was not all sugar and roses.
It came about largely because of the oppressive opium wars and China's humiliation and defeat.
The recent American backed and financed student riots in Hong Kong, was an attempt to destabilise both HK and the main land, and it fortunately failed miserably.
