Between lifetimes (after spending some time in purgatory) all souls get to rest in heaven for many years (hundred years or more).

So we all get lots of rest between lifetimes.

After liberation (called moksha by Hindus or nirvana by Buddhists) we can rest for eternity if we want. But most souls choose to perform some kind of service after liberation.
