Both are very contextual. Buddhism? Christianity? Nationalist Socialism?
From my perspective, the swastika represents the Nazis, only with a tiny asterisk.

This sucks for the traditions that used the symbol before, but the baggage of the Holocaust is just too much to ignore now.

Interview with the Vampire. "Actually, I'm quite fond of looking at crucifixes," Lious (Brad Pitt) explained to Daniel.

Although I realize that the swastika has its roots in Indian religion, that meaning has entirely been coopted by its use by the Nazis. The swastika basically means "Death to all Jews."

And while I realize that for Christians the cross is a symbol of God's love, Jews like me associate it with thousands of years of persecution and death. Imagine living in the Ukraine, and the Cossacks break into your home, crosses on their chests, and they yell "Christ Killers" as they murder every member of your family.

The swastika is a symbol of good fortune, prosperity, and auspiciousness.

The cross symbolizes the crucifixion of Jesus. Also repels vampires.
the celtic cross, the cross found on native american petroglyphs predate the christian cross among other forms predating the christian cross.

the cross bar yoke is a cross used to cultivate.

what is better than the good forune, prosperity, and auspiciouness of love, or yoking two together as one friend?

Swastika: Nazis.
The Cross: execution by torture.
The service to self type will always use the same resources available at the suffering to other as self.

No surprise.

But at some point it will fail because it will be in direct opposition to the whole; which it has separated/divided itself from. a house divided against itself will fall/fail

And the use of that cross by the Celtic people predate its use by Native Americans. ;)

In all fairness, you did ask what the symbols meant to me.

Typically, if you just say "cross," most westerners will default to the one used as a symbol of Christianity.

If one means another type of cross, it's usually stated with a qualifier, i.e. "Celtic," or "bar."

Yoking two what together?

Certain simple symbols are often used by multiple cultures. Like a circle, or star, or cross. No big deal.

However, given the billions of Christians in the world, people today do associate it with Christianity.
