If South Tyrol decides to be annexed by Austria through referendum...will you prevent South Tyroleans from doing it?
Ask that for any such groups, but by international law I doubt it is valid - since it is so often corrupted by various things like an influx from one country or by other means. So, rather too simple an argument I would think.

It is valid.
A people cannot be ruled by a foreign government against their own will.
The democratic principle is that the majority decides.

Breakaway groups setting themselves up as a sovereign nation is valid? Like to quote the law involved?

When you sign an agreement agreeing to the sovereignty of the Ukraine there is no right procedure the agreement is broken plain and simple. If they didn't agree they shouldn't say they do agree it was an out right lie. But that's very typical of Russia in conflicts no one ever should of believed them..

There's a famous quote that "war is a continuation of politics by other means."

But the same could be said about law, as it's the reflection of the politics and politicians who make the law.

Ultimately, it comes down to whatever "feels" right to whoever is in a position to make a ruling. Sometimes it's a judge, sometimes it's a general.

Just sounds like anarchy to me, but I'm willing to be informed.

It is anarchy. Humans are a strange animal. It's still the law of the jungle, but we think it's our jungle and we get to make the rules.
The interesting thing is that it's only anarchy and law of the jungle between nations. We have rules and laws and enforcers for these rules and laws on every level, from private homes over cities or counties over states to countries, sometimes even between a select group of countries (like the EU) and we can (mostly) act like adults within these constructs. Only between nations we revert back to entitled brats, not accepting any authority. If earth were a country, we'd classify it as "failed" and unrulable.
