The UK's Greatest Prime Minister died this morning.

She was responsible for awful things from the Hunger Strikes to the destruction of mining communities to sheltering Pinochet.

Britain has produced many many leaders far greater then her.

I had a gigantic amount of respect for that crazy old bag. You know who she reminded me of? John Wayne. She was rough, tough, and didn't take crap from anyone.

Greatest PM, though? I'd give that to Churchill.

she saved our nation. just because she did unpopular things doesn't detract from that.

she also ended the cold war....

apart from Churchill, I challenge you to name one.

yes probably.... but he was a man.... one thing she did do was stamp out the stereotype that women can't be leaders.

Disraeli

Policies he put forth regarding the Empire in the 1870s gave Britain the material wealth to survive both World Wars. Without him, Europe would have been dominated by Nazi Germany.

Jenkinson

Stopped Napoleon, ended a serious economic recession by returning to the Gold Standard (estimates suggest that the British economy would have contracted by as much as 10%).

Wellesely

Freed the Micks.

Gascoyne-Cecil

Provided housing for the poor. True first step of the modern Social Contract.

Andrew Bonar Law

Good Canadian boy. Only PM born outside the British Isles. His middle name is 'Bonar', which amuses me endlessly.

Just to name a few.

Reagan ended the cold war? Really?

If I had to choose a single name to attribute that merit to, it would probably be Gorbachev.

As for Thatcher, I won't try to judge her economic policies, but I sure admire her handling of the invasion of the Falklands.

Gorbachev bowed to an inevitability. Reagan's military spending spree forced the USSR to try and keep up, effectively destroying their poorly designed economic model. Reagan deserves most of the kudos for the end of Soviet Russia.

That sure isn't how it seems to me. But it is hardly news that most Americans have an image of Reagan that is not compatible with mine.

Also:

Reagan deserves most of the kudos for the end of Soviet Russia.

Were it true, it wouldn't be a good thing. But it isn't. Soviet Russia ended because it wasn't sustainable.

That's my take on Ronnie Rayguns too.

I attended UofM with the fella who ran the Star Wars research program (smart dude). I was in mechanical engineering,
& he was in aerospace at the time, but our paths crossed at the gym where we both worked as towel jockies.

Really,i thought the UK's greatest Prime Minister died a long time ago,it certainly isn't that spindley old bag Thatcher, when she spoke in her condescending tone I wanted to vomit, all she seemed to care about was getting a title which she got.

Thatchers government managed to sell off British Rail,British Telecom,British Gas,state run water, killed the Coal industry, sent our Army without air cover to the Falklands, caused long term hatred in Northern Ireland,i guess though that their are people who will miss her, personally though I say good riddance!.

In war time Churchill united the country. In peace time Thatcher divided the country.

I predict a national shortage of bunting.
