The value of respect

What attributes are neccesary in order for something to be worthy of respect?

Is the value of respect cheapened if we make this criteria broader?

Generally, in regard to respecting humans, I give everyone the benefit of the doubt in being respect worthy from the get go. If a person does something I find irritating or morally repugnant, 8 times out of 10 I will tell them so but in general they haven't lost my respect. It takes quite a bit of premeditated disregard for my feelings or basic morality in general for me to knock someone off my list of friends/respected persons for good. And, they'll certainly know it. :)

Hmm. Respect is respect to me. Guess I need further direction here, Fluffy. :)

Whatever respect actually is, it needs to be earned, and not granted freely. Not that we shouldn't treat unknown people with respect, just that we should not respect them, until they have proved that they are worth it. It is possible to hate someone and respect them. It is possible to love someone and have no respect.

I think respect is earned by merely being a fellow human being.

He who respects others is higher in my book than he who is merely respected

Respect in a way is like forgiveness, it should be freely given.

I think it makes it more challenging.

Respect is the meaning and secret of life.

I think respect should be freely given initially but earned when a broader relationship is entered into. Personally, I find it very hard to respect someone who does not respect me. If there were any criteria necessary it involves a receprocal relationship.

Respect is not an even mixture... it is very lumpy.
You can be respected for things others hate you for.
It is most unlikely every one can respect you......

imo we all have some rights from birth. one of them is respect.
respect, in my mind has nothing to do with agreement, love, sympathy.....etc

there is anohter kind of respect. i guess it is more like combination of respect, love, agreement, admiration and people has to earn it naturally.

I agree with lava,
that there is more than one kind of respect.

There is basic human respect,
which should be afforded every individual,
unless they prove themselves to be utter slime.
(less than human)
Then they get basic slime respect.

Now the other kind of respect is the "kick butt" kind.
When someone overcomes great obstacles,
digs deep within themselves for a thing of value,
stands for something of worth/truth against all worldly odds,
gives of themself selflessly for a greater good,
accomplishes something of a higher nature,
reaches a level of mastery that elevates your sense of possibility....
that is a different kind of respect.

I personally NEVER bestow anyone that "elevated" respect,
just because they have some title, or position, or credential,
or prominance, in the world.
That's just "ordinary" stuff within the world system.
ACTUALLY DO/say something that "rocks" my reality,
and the heightened respect is yours in a second.

(a number of you here have it BTW!
my heightened sense of respect.....)
