I suppose for anything of the human element, you have someone, sometime, the greatest. That is, until someone else comes along greater still.

The word Opera in Italian means work. Jacopo Peri (1561-1633), composed the first acknowledged opera, Dafne, in the late 1590s. So for 400 years plus there has been Opera.

In those years, many have been the greatest. Before we could record their voices.

But I think the greatest voice in Opera has been recorded. Of course, that is not just my opinion. If you listen, you will know that the greatest lived and died in what is for many our lifetime.

Carlo Bergonzi (13 July 1924 – 25 July 2014) was an Italian operatic tenor. Although he performed and recorded some bel canto and verismo roles, he was above all associated with the operas of Giuseppe Verdi.
