The worship of nonHindu deities?

Not to mention the kami of Shinto and genii loci ("spirits of a place"). Rural village Hinduism is rife with belief in genii loci aka devas specific to a location.

I know! It's kind of exciting to know, no matter where we go, we're never alone. There's always at least one Deva or Devi around :D

...Hapi, the Nile River God, is "unknown" to the Hindu pantheon...

Btw, this is not so unusual in Hinduism. Let's remember Mother Ganga and the Saraswati River, personified as goddesses. The Ganges, (former) Saraswati and Nile rivers were the life blood of the peoples living near them. So if Hindus spread to Egypt or China, I wouldn't doubt they'd deify the Nile, Yellow and Yangtze rivers.

I agree with that! We Hindus love our rivers :D

Well I think I have been able to develop a pretty good opinion on the matter. Honesty it does not bother me. I feel being a Hindu is WAY more about how you live and less about who you choose to worship besides its the same one deity. If God speaks to you in the form of that deity or that one that's okay. I can see where vinyaka is coming he gets enough and more from Hindu deities and I am happy he found that.I personally get just about everything I need from Kali maa I don't even worship other goddesses(yet?). Yet jainarayan obviously feels that the divine is speaking to him through other deities and that is just fine

I'm a collector by nature... clothes, books, movies, music, deities. :D I may have lived as a hunter-gatherer in a past life.

Hmm... that's true. I was thinking maybe as recently as being one of the North American Plains Indians. I always had a fascination for Native Americans. I think it's the feathers.

I love anything having to do with the Native Americans. :D

There is quite a lot in common between Sun Dance and kavadi. I wish I could go to a real sundance ceremony, but they're quite secretive these days about such things. I wonder why?

Might have something to do with the whole, "you stole our land and kidnapped our women and children and forced us to convert on pain of death" type thing.

But yes, I wish I could go as well. I heard that, if invited, you may attend. Though I don't see that happening with me anytime soon.

I have been to a couple of sacred medicine wheel cairn sites. Usually on the top of the highest hills around.

How can you tell?

It was sarcasm, but yes, in my teachings, you can see younger souls as anyone who isn't self-disciplined. It's similar to young people in a single lifetime. You recognize the physical and intellectual qualities of a young person, don't you?

Put that onto the spiritual plane, and observe the spiritual nature. Young souls argue, don't care much about other people, etc. all the things you might expect from someone who hasn't reincarnated enough to get the hang of this planet, so to speak. But eventually they will. We were all young once.

Know this not did I, but much sense this makes. :yoda:

The natives of Bali are known to worship local deities along with the hindu religion, similarly how many haitians venerate the vodou lwa with catholic saints, and also the same with shinto Japanese also practice buddhism. Syncretic beliefs usually have to do with folk religion and heritage.

Religious Taoism has roots in Chinese traditional religion ("folk religion" sounds backwoods), with some borrowings from Buddhism and Hinduism.

I'm a Hindu-Buddhist syncretist. My primary pantheon is the Hindu one, but I do include some Boddhisattvas as well as Buddha himself (although I do not worship him). When I make my alter, I may include Christ and Mary as well; as representations of the divine and as a homage to my past religion.

As far as I'm concerned, including other deities is fine, as long as the practitioner is focused and knows what they want out of their religion/spiritual philosophy.

It is just so incredibly difficult to move from practicing Christianity to full blown Hinduism. If one cannot discard the outer trappings, imagine the difficulty getting rid of the inner trappings of the subconscious mind.

Are you saying its difficult I the can't remove the trappings or just difficult in general?
