"There is no god higher than the truth" -- Gandhi

Well? Did he have a point or not? Answer or die!

BONUS QUESTION: Guess the total number of marbles RF has caused me to lose since I joined the Forum over 15 years ago.

Hint: Over the past 15 years, I have been forced to take out no less than twenty-six bank loans to buy more marbles. I mainly blame @Saint Frankenstein . The man is a miscreant, I tell you! A miscreant!

I'm not convinced he actually said this, despite all of the memes found under images. Sadly, I can't find anything is a cursory search to confirm nor deny this.

I just find it suspect and a little more than coincidental that it is almost verbatim the motto of Theosophy, "There is no religion higher than truth (Satyam nasti paro dharma)."

Gandhi was, however, involved with Theosophy.

I would bet money on your suspicions proving to be true, Scott.

Since Truth is an attribute of Divinity, the statement does not make sense to me whoever said it.

He's talking about social justice probably and also honesty in religion. He apparently doesn't like mysteries in religions -- a division between the knowers and the not-knowers.

Humans really like to imagine that they can know the truth, because knowledge gives us control and we really like being in control. It's why atheists call their god "truth" and why theists call their truth, "God". I don't know if Gandhi understood this, or not.

Bu divine beings disagree with each other ' Were the ones going to heaven! No were the only ones going to heaven! See my point? So all the Gods can't be right.

Truth => Existential Truth. Existence, Being (the verb 'to be') cannot be falsified, hence the statement has value.

Etymology: Truth = Satya in Sanskrit. Satya comes from root word Sat == unchanging and eternal. So Satya = truth = that which holds eternally without deviation.
Sat = that which is true and exists eternally, without change.
VedAnta does not apply the root Sat to anything that is transient. Hence the only truth according to VedAnta is that which is eternally unchanging or that does not stop existing such as bodies of living beings.

The most fundamental to Brahman' is Sat (Existential Truth) . Chit (Sentience, Awareness) , Anand (bliss) follow as observed.

Taittarey Upanishad says : satyam jnAnanm anantam Bramhan'
satya = Existential Truth
jnAna = Full of Knowledge of THAT which is eternally existentially True (dnyAna)
ananta = without end (anta) = Never-ending = Eternal (beyond Time)
Bramhan' = vast, ever-growing, infinite (beyond Space)

satyam jnAnanm anantam nityam anAkAsham paramAkAsham - GovindAshtak, line describing Ultimate Truth.
nitya = eternally in the same state / eternal , perpetual, does not come to an end.
anAkAsh = beyond space, other than space, not occupying space (AkAsh)
para-AkAsh = the highest sky, the highest dimension of existence.

----------
** An appeal to the VedAntic world to use straight spelling Bramhan', instead of Brahman'. Like some people turn samAdhi into samahdi. Emphasis is on mha , dha , not h + m, h+ d. It does not reflect the original sanskrit pronunciation. I wonder who came up with it.

...

I think love is the highest.

He who doesn't love doesn't know God, for God is love.

1 John 4:8

We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
1 John 4:16

Those are human interpretations of books. The relationship of that to Truth is loose at best.

Although -- as Scott points out -- it most likely was not said by Gandhi, I think whoever said it might haven been trying to express the notion that denying the truth of one matter or another out of an effort to avoid some kind of overt or implicit criticism of one's deity is misguided.

Suggest replacing marbles with ball bearings. More durable.

I believe In the Sikh religion Sat (Truth) is the name for God and Krishna calls sat the Supreme Truth. Jesus also calls Himself The Truth.

You sure the loans were for marbles and not erotic dancing girls?
