This is Sacred, Respect it

"Nothing must be held sacred. Question everything. God is not great, Jesus is not your lord, you are not disciples of any charismatic prophet. You are all human beings who must make your way through your life by thinking and learning, and you have the job of advancing humanity's knowledge by winnowing out the errors of past generations and finding deeper understanding of reality. You will not find wisdom in rituals and sacraments and dogma, which build only self-satisfied ignorance, but you can find truth by looking at your world with fresh eyes and a questioning mind."

Do Hindu's hold that all cows are sacred or just the Brahma's or whatever it is they have over there? I frequent an Indian restaurant and they regualry serve beef. Also, have any Hindu's ever worked with Holsteins? Because if you had you might jsut change your mind about cows being sacred! Possesed, maybe. Also, why do Hundu's believe cows are sacred? I've never actually heard an explanation given.

Regarding the OP: I feel a bit sorry for those with such an attitude, really. It is a shame to have to resort to special privilege. It really ammounts to begging, come to think of it.

This issue is rather simple to me. I do not go out of my way to desecrate what someone else finds sacred, even if it isn't personally sacred to me. I, personally, find a sense of reverence healthy and humbling, and reverence does not have to be reserved for specifically religious matters alone. Many good scientists find the mystery of the universe humbling and awe-inspiring, as do I, though I am no scientist.

However, there are exceptions. If someone wishes to debate their religious ideas, sacred to them, then I assume that by the very rules of debate, (s)he has given me permission to counter those ideas. If you don't want me to counter your religious ideas, don't bring it up for debate or discussion, and don't push them on me.

I also adamantly support separation of civil government and religion. I will respect a person's right to hold religious views, but once someone tries to impose them on me, my own rights are violated, and I have the right to defend myself and society against that. Someone else's religion immediately becomes my business when it is imposed on me or anyone else.

This also means that while I will not go out of my way to offend someone's religious sensibilities, especially in that person's home, etc., I will also not hide who I am because I am somehow considered offensive by nature of my innate characteristics. I am gay, for instance. I do not try to offend people by this. But I will not hide it or suppress it just because some people hold homophobia to be sacred (which I obviously do not), and I will oppose all attempts to further the oppression of LGBT people (and other groups) through law, especially when religion is unconstitutionally used toward this aim, as it so often is, especially in the Republican Party.

Or... you are unable to see the ah (delight) of every day life.
It is obvious, to me, that you cannot yet fathom the degree of my unbounded delight. An idea you might appreciate is that sacred/profane are merely meaningless aspects of dualistic thinking. Do try to get beyond that.

then again... maybe... you are right it's beyond meaning....
You are welcome to project whatever qualities you wish onto reality, just don't expect me to pat you on the head for doing so.

could it be I am just full of crap.
your choice.
What you cannot quite appreciate just yet is that all us human animals are "full of crap", however, I suppose one could say that some are more "full of it" than are others. Take heart, you are not alone.

You said there is no sacred. I said just he opposite there is only sacred. Both views are non-dualist. get it.

How is being beyond meaning projection, what the mind can't comprehend it is unable to project? Now come on give me that pat you know you want to.)(

I fully appreciate that I am full of crap.

Balance, It sounds like when you told him you were athiest, he assumed all the reasons that make you an athiest, and he felt insulted among other things, and maybe he thought God was insulted. than he revealed to you his personal reason, for wanting to follow God, the inheritance. taking the high road, I think he became a hipocrate in prayer. By the way did you hold hands too.?

The cow represents the world and nature. Thats why she is sacred. Cows also give life, they give us milk and there dung is used for growing crops.

I frequent an Indian restaurant and they regualry serve beef.
The owners might be muslims from India or just secular Hindu's.

All cows are considered 'sacred'. They are seen as one of the seven Mothers. The cow is considered to be in the mode of Goodness, a loving and gentle creature. We humans also feed off her milk, which is a nursing food. She is Mother. My house is next to a paddock. I've been living around cows for over 6 years and in my opinion they are very gentle and sweet animals.

Just because a restaurant is in India doesn't mean it's Hindu :)

I don't think that any of my friends have ever refrained from eating cow meat in front of me. I don't think it occurs to most people. I generally don't let it bother me but earlier in the year I was at my boyfriend's family's home and everyone had huge steaks on their plates. The smell and sight was enough to make me sick to my stomach. I know I overreacted but I felt quite hurt and emotional about it.

I think so too, one of my favourite animals :)

I felt the same, when I was growing up we couldn't eat pork. Going out with friends and at school, people would eat it in front of me, most of the time not even remembering about me. But, since then I have become vegetarian, and still if I go out to restaurants people will eat it in front of me.

I know the latter is slightly different as it isn't for religious reasons - but I understand how you felt :)

It's nice to know that people can relate :)
I think it's worse when the people are supposed to be close to you. If it had been random people or acquaintances it wouldn't have bothered me as much emotionally.

Yeah, I guess it would have been nice for them to respect your faith and avoid the steaks really. Or at least have asked you whether you minded.

People can be tricky at times.

Its only a Label
Friends,

SACRED!

Its again just a label developed by human minds.
And only when the MIND itself is transcended one knows that there is nothing as sacred or ordinary. Things simply ARE!

Did anyone offer a working definition for sacred?
did I miss it?

Some have boo-hooed over discussions gone sour, for cause of conflicting beliefs and dogma.....

Trying being a rogue theologian.

I am rarely accepted at any door.

The atheists refrain because of my persistent.....God did it....

And the believers refrain because I would ask....
What if your dogma is true?...let's run with it...and see where it goes!

Only now and then, do I get....'yeah'....

No thing is sacred. Period. I'll go along with all things being unique, but calling them sacred is going a tad far in my opinion. The reason, as given, is that "sacred" inherently implies the existence of the "profane". That's not cricket. In a sense, you cannot have your cake and eat it too.

How is being beyond meaning projection, what the mind can't comprehend it is unable to project? Now come on give me that pat you know you want to.)(
Don't hold your breath, Grasshopper. I said it was relatively meaningless, not "beyond meaning". Each and every one of us is projecting, all the live long day. It matters not if you are projecting into/onto the unknown, as you are still projection.

I fully appreciate that I am full of crap.
Such is life in the three dimensional universe. :D Once one is aware of it, it does make the whole experience go down easier.

To say there is nothing sacred you are implying there is nothing profane. To say dog crap is sacred this also implies there is nothing profane. It is the mind that is confused by semantics. Both are true and both are false. Just communicating an idea to someone presupposes duality.

So much for this conversation, believe it or not I enjoy our conversations.

I think we should keep in mind that just because someone finds something sacred, doesn't mean we have to. I just go a step further and respect those people who find those things sacred. I don't think it pays for me to possibly offend them for no reason.

And what if you have a reason? Or what if your intention isn't to offend?
