This is what a police state looks like.

i watched the film i have a couple of things to say
no its not a police state you could hardly compare it to what happened in Burma lately.
we had something called the poll tax riots here back in the eighties it was police survielence cameras that caught people smashing up shops looting etc .
its uncomfortable to watch yes but its a good job the cameras are there i think because the cops know it so they can only go so far .

Friend MidnightBlue,
Though did not watch the clip, can say this that any state is the gross total of the minds of that state. individual minds has so many shades which multiplied by the population is the gross total.
US citizens voted BUSH to power knowing his views on Iraq and see what happened.
In Mynmar too the gross total mind is weak compared to the few who are ruling and so we see and hear what is happening.
Enlightenment happens only in the no-mind and when more people are enlightened in a state then harmony will be seen everywhere.

Invasion of Iraq. Shock and Awe. Abu Ghraib. Thousands of detainees without charges. Torture. Oil. Ghost WMDs. Halliburton. Blackwater. Providing Israel with new Bunker Buster bombs to attack Lebanese towns. The War on Terror. Guantanamo Bay. Kangaroo courts. Indefinite detention. Presidential orders to ignore Geneva Conventions. Illegal National Security Agency wiretapping. Fingerprinting visitors. Destroying the torture tapes. Firing attorneys.

Friend Francine,
Yes, they are all due to the collective mind of the people or due to some who controls the collective minds. That is the reason in Gita [religious text in India] the whole story is about why man should stand up against injustice.
Through the natural laws of evolution even the collective mind is changing and we see much protests against all sorts of injustice happening anywhere.
Protests / wars / battles / etc. will keep on going around to seek balance in nature. Good and bad must be in equal proportion always. Without Satand God cannot exists. There cannot be only one magetiic pole; impossible.
However by transcending the mind only can one overcome all dualities.

The video is disgusting. It's pure propaganda.

I WAS THERE!

After work, the protestors refused to allow me to go to my car so I could just go home. There is absolutely no way to tell why the gentleman was taken into custody. The US Supreme Court has stated that it is bad policy to second guess officers.

If anything comes off as police state, its the makers of this video. The voiceover with clips of Nazi Germany thrown in. DISGUSTING.

I was HAPPY the police were there.

EDIT: The voiceover states nothing was thrown. That's a lie. I was there and the protestors had thrown projectiles.

As for the cameras, protestors had rioted a year or so before, causing property damage to downtown businesses. The cameras were there this time to aid in prosecution in case of a similar occurence.

Maybe. The police in my county have routinely photographed protesters, their vehicles and their license plates for years, though, and I doubt you could make much of a case for the prosecution unless you caught acts of vandalism on tape, which is clearly not what the police here were concerned about.

It would be ideal if we could stop the continued encroachment on our constitutional rights before we achieve parity with Burma.

Actually, it is what they were concerned about. They were attempting to identify previous vandalizers and those they believed had the potential to harm the city. Catching them in the act is not the only evidence available. Evidence that they were present at the time of the crime is beneficial and the trier of fact may give it due consideration.

Not being at all critical of you Nutshell, I just wanted to add that even when people are there, they can still see things the way they want to see them. If you're hit by a cop, it's always "Ah, police brutality!" and yet when a cop is standing behind a picket line and gets a urine-fille balloon smashed over his head, then it's "Suck sh** copper!" I don't believe in, and have never practiced, senseless violence. I'm just a guy trying to keep the peace who would like to go home to his family each day like everybody else.

Darn it. I wasn't going to get involved in this thread. *takes a deep cleansing breath*

There was no encroachment on constitutional rights. The First Amendment protects free speech, but it does not guarantee that speech anywhere/anytime. Most cities have local ordinances that require demonstrators to get a license for a specific date, time, and geographic area. These protestors failed to do that and/or failed to follow the guidelines set out in the license.

It's so much more interesting when you get the whole story, isn't it.

There are always three sides to a coin.

Obviously my experience is influenced by who I am. That said, what I am sharing with you is a present sense impression.

I would like to add that I was the senior most manager working at the time of the protest and I had a steady stream of employees asking if they could leave early and get home because they were afraid of the protestors because of what the protestors (not the police) had already done to the city during the prior demonstration!
