It is a serious question. I think it is complicated. First idea - when we act according to our own principles, whatever they may be, self esteem is the result, and conversely when we act against our own principles, self loathing is the result. That gets complicated by the impact of peer pressure, given that we are primates with genetically coded pack-oriented reward and punishment systems. This results in complicity with the perceived dominant entities, despite our personal principles, and the dominant entities are probably not working for the group...
It's a mess, IOW. Our biological coding works OK for small bands, but not for global chaos. So the conflicting demands on self esteem and pack bonding %$#@ us over completely.
That's my best guess.
