Good point. It seems to be an idiom because it is used freely as if it were.Whenever the three days and three nights of Matthew 12:40 is brought up in a "discussion" with 6th day crucifixion folks, they frequently argue that it is a Jewish idiom for counting any part of a day as a whole day. I wonder if anyone has documentation that shows that the phrase "x" days and "x"nights was ever used in the first century or before when it didnt include at least parts of the "x" days and at least parts of the "x" nights?
9-18-2031?Jesus was born 9-22-4 BC and died 4-25-31 AD and will return,
most likely on 9-18-2031 AD.
Since it's again been awhile, someone new visiting this site may know of examples.
So you are saying Jesus died on Thursday instead of Friday as most people believe? You must first ask yourself, what is a day and a night? To the Jews in those days, a day began when the sunset, then there was a period of darkness followed by an equal period of Light.
In the North pole we have a six month periods of night followed by a six month period of Light. On Mercury, Venus, Earth , Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, Each night is followed by an equal period of light. On the day of preparation to the Jewish Passover, God created an extra day, of three hours of darkness from 12 PM to 3 PM, and the following three hours of light from 3 PM to 6 PM.
Jesus said, "A Day has 12 hours has it not, etc.
Jesus was dead for that first period of light, of Thursday, that first day, [Day one] he remained dead, Friday night [Night one] and Friday, the Most Holy of Sabbaths, the day of Passover, [Day two], Saturday night, [Night two] and Saturday, the normal weekly Sabbath [Day three], and Sunday night [Night three].
For darkness to have covered Jerusalem for a period of three hours, and knowing that the longest eclipse of the sun is no more that about seven minutes, there had to be an incoming heavenly object that remained between the sun and the city for three hours, and the supposed earthquake, could have been a Tunguska-like fireball that exploded over the desert wasteland east of the Jordan, rocking the mountains and shaking the Temple so violently that the curtain in front of the Holy of Holies tore from the top to the bottom.

Very interesting idea. I would like to know more. What time of day on Thursday did He die and when did He rise from the grave? Does it add up to 72 hours which would seem to be what three days and three nightts would be.Correct! The Jews had incorporated, the Day of Passover, which was to be a religious celebration held separate from the seven day festival of Unleavened Bread, into one festival, which they called the Passover, which lasted for seven days.
Jesus held the Passover on the correct evening, symbolically offering his own body in the form of Bread and wine in place of the Pascal Lambs, which the Jews Killed on the same day as they murdered Jesus, which was the day of preparation to their Passover, which was in fact the first day of the seven day Festival of Unleavened Bread.

The Anointed,
When I suggested that you start a new topic, I didn't mean within this one.

But it seems like Jesus was not in the tomb during the three hours of light on Thursday. So the only periods of light when He was in the tomb would be Friday and Saturday. He said He would be "in the heart of the earth" for three days and three nights not just that He would be dead. I think this idea is worth investigating but a few details need to be cleared up.Nope! Not 72 hours, but three days and three nights. The Jewish day begins at sunset, and a Day is a period of Darkness followed by an equal period of Light, as revealed in a previous post of mine in this thread in this page.
A normal day to the Jews would be 12 hours of darkness followed by 12 hours of Light.
Jesus held his one day Passover celebration with his disciples in accordance with the times stipulated in the Torah, the one day celebration of Passover which day was followed by the seven day Festival of Unleavened Bread, but which was in the evening/beginning of the day of preparation to the Jewish seven day festival, as they had incorporated the one day Passover Festival into the seven day Festival of Unleavened Bread, eating their Passover meal in the evening of the 15th day of the first month, instead of the 14th day.
He was sentenced to death on the 6th hour of the 12 hours of darkness [Midnight] on the day of preparation to the Jewish Passover. He was nailed to the cross on the third hour of daylight, 9 AM on the day of preparation to the Jewish Passover, Darkness covered the city of Jerusalem from the 6 th hour of the day of preparation to the Jewish Passover [Midday] till the 9th hour [3 PM] when Jesus gave up the spirit and the three hours of light that followed the three hours of Darkness returned to the city.
His lifeless body was buried just as the sun was setting on the day of preparation to the Jewish Passover and the beginning of their most Holy Sabbath wherein the evening and beginning of that Great Sabbath that preceded to normal weekly Sabbath, the Jews were sitting down to eat their Pascal Lambs which had been killed between the two evenings.
The three hours of light that had followed the three hours of darkness being the first day, Friday night, the first night, Friday the second day, Saturday night, the second night, Saturday, the third day, Sunday night, the third night. Three days and three nights.
1 Peter 3: 19; Before his lifeless body was buried, Jesus was already in the bowels of the earth having descended to the days of Noah, where he preached the Good News also to those who were disobedient when Noah was building the ark.
