Today's youth... What is the problem?

We Never Know

Today I stopped at a taco bell. My order came to $19.60.
I gave the girl(looked around age 20) $20.10. She pulls out a dollar and some change then counts on her fingers...
She puts it back, counts on her fingers again and pulls out more change..
She puts it back, goes into deep thought so I said "$19.60, I gave you $20.10 so my change is $.50 cents".
She pulls out some more change, counts on her fingers again and gives me $.45 cents. I just laughed and said thanks.

My point... This has happened many times at different places. These are the kids that are being raised now days. They can't think and many don't have common sense. Sadly its getting worse instead of better.

Who Denigrates Today’s Youth?: The Role of Age, Implicit Theories, and Sharing the Same Negative Trait

Adults perceive the youth of the present as being worse than from when they were young. This phenomenon has been shown to be a product of a memory bias, adults are unable to accurately recall what children were like in the past so they impose their current selves onto their memories. In two studies using American adults (N = 2,764), we seek to connect this finding to age, implicit theories of change, and extend the beliefs in the decline of the youth to new domains. Here we show as people age, they hold harsher beliefs about present children. Those who believe a trait does not change throughout the lifespan exhibit more forgiving attitudes toward the youth of today, believing they may not be in such decline on that trait. Finally, people who are low in a negative trait believe strongly that children are becoming more deficient in that particular trait (e.g., those who are not narcissistic believe the youth are becoming more narcissistic).

Another example...

At Lowes Tuesday my bill came to $216.13.
I gave the kid(boy probably early 20's) $221.13.
He says "you gave me too much money and tried to hand me my $1 back. I said ring it up, give $5 change and we are good. He looked puzzled, thought for a minute, rang it up and said "oh you are right".

If a person can't figure out $.50 change, it isnt bias. Especially when told its $.50 cents and after counting on their fingers they only give you $.45 lol

Cool. Are you sure things like this are a new phenomenon? It is possible that things like this happened just a frequently 20 years ago, or 50 years ago etc

Is this something that only young people do? Is it possible that 50 year old people do things like this, or 70 year old people? etc

Some people are naturally better at maths. People rarely use cash these days so no practise. I don't think it's a youth problem.
I disagree. Many places today even have automatic returns for the coin change, so all they have to figure are the bills.
They are used to not having to figure change because the machine will do it for them.

I'm in my early 60's and its been happening more and more for the last 5-10 years.
Don't recall it happening much in my younger years.

I have no idea what an automatic return is.

I do remember as a kid in the 60's the large department stores in Australia had these air operated tubes, the shop assistant would put the money in a capsule, fire it off in the tube and a short while latter your change would come down another tube. I guess they didn't trust their workers. I used to wonder who the god like figure was who had control over the money tubes.

Not to mention most write on phones, tablets or computers that have spell check and/or auto correct. Look at papers even my grandkids write on those and they look like ace spellers...
Look at hand written papers and its clear they aren't lol

"I have no idea what an automatic return"

Many registers have a coin bank attached to them. When paying, the change coins are auto-figured and automatically returned down a tray by the register/computer.

Mustn't have made it down under or I've never noticed and I usually just tap these days.
