Toxic social media

I agree I don't take it seriously in that way, but I do think that in those cases it is kind of pointless.

Because people are not going to convince me that Kenobi was a good TV show, regardless of how much they praise it unless they can throw some arguments in there to convince me why it is good. But that is not really what people do on Reddit, because as you say, I think they have an agenda.

I haven't seen that show, although I recall from my time posting on the IMDb discussion boards (before they were zapped out of existence), I know people can be quite contentious and quarrelsome when arguing over movies and TV shows. But it wasn't really very well moderated and had a lot of trolls, which is likely the reason it got ashcanned. They also had a political forum which was a complete zoo, and it got progressively worse leading up to the 2016 election. It was shortly after that they pulled the plug on the discussion boards altogether.

Have anyone had a similar experience there in regard to other topics? or on other social media platforms?

I enjoy most of the Internet sites I visit where people post opinions. The Internet is where one can see people as they are absent social limitations apart from forum rules. They're anonymous, and protracted interchanges are possible as they are on RF, affording a view of humanity not available elsewhere. I feel that I've learned a lot about people in the process, although very little is encouraging.

With Reddit, I like the stories of people at jobs with abusive employers. I have no other connection with the workplace any longer. I enjoy the relationship stories involving outrageous in-laws, and the wedding dramas. You see a side to people not otherwise visible, and apparently, I'm endlessly fascinated with their thoughts and behaviors. I never get tired of it, and I continue to extract new insights fairly regularly. The antivaxxer sites I visited have me a huge insight into the thinking of such people, also not pretty.

I don't mind people enjoying something, but at least in my opinion, people will defend these things like mad dogs, against any criticism regardless of how good of an argument you make.

Maybe it's just how some people are, I know that there are poor movies I enjoy, but I would have no issue with people having a go at them because I am well aware that they are bad. But still, they can be good entertainment. But a lot of people don't seem to be able to make such a distinction on Reddit.

And the sad part is that I honestly think it ends up ruining entertainment because people will step out of line in order to defend or attack these things. For instance, as some might know Rings of power is releasing tomorrow, and IMDB has had to remove the rating from it because people are going mental I assume. It's like nothing but 10 or 1, depending on which side of the battlefield you are on for these people.

I'm just impressed by the amount of hate people can apply to something like movies. Again I could understand it if it was religious or political stuff.

I hardly pay much attention to the IMDb rating system or anything like that, since people seem to find numerous ways to game the system. I've noticed that Google reviews and sites like Yelp have come under scrutiny over whether the reviews and ratings are from genuine users or not. There are even services which will help businesses recover their reputation if someone has it in for them and posts a lot of fake bad reviews.

But yeah, there are some movies and shows people can have strong views about, both positive and negative. If it's not about the quality of the film, it might be about the content or the issues raised within the story. Or they might argue over technical accuracy, especially when it comes to war movies or historical dramas.

One of my favorite boards to frequent was the discussion board for the movie JFK (1991). There were very few actual discussions of the movie itself, but it did have quite a few people arguing about a possible conspiracy in the JFK assassination. There were two basic camps, those who believed there was a conspiracy, and those who believed that Oswald acted alone (lone nut).

This is one of the more interesting threads to me because I was wondering about joining reddit.

As to the rest, RF is where I hang out, twitter for a very very small set of informative posters and Facebook for friends.

I don't rely on ratings either, but even the reviews from sites that you would think had some quality will rate stuff a 10/10 and never go below 4.

I saw a review saying that Kenobi might be the best SW show made on pair with the OT.

But anyone seeing this chase scene from the first episode should be able to see that this is not 10/10.

So whether they are paid to just write stuff like that or not I don't know. But the fact is that if they do, they are ruining the purpose of reviews for everyone, because you don't know who to trust then.

Love the JFK movie and have seen a lot of theories about it as well. Some of them are pretty far fetched but none the less entertaining. :)

As long as it is something where people are not mental about opinions it might be worth it, you can always just lurk around for a bit and see how people reply to each other. :)

Oh yeah, the comments section on threads/articles on FB is an absolute troll and/or ignorance festival. It's ridiculous.

FB is the only other social I use, mainly for family contact.
