Treated Badly at Work?

It also helps to try taking some responsibility for things nominally beyond one's control.
One often has more power to change things & prevent strife than one might initially think.
Tis a shame it took me so long to learn that. But it sure worked for me.

I try to do this as well. If I see a problem has arisen or is going to arise and I'm in a position to resolve it or facilitate it being resolved I'll do so, even if it's not strictly my responsibility to do so. As long as you don't go too far and neglect your long term responsibilities in the process there is nothing wrong with doing this. I worked with some managers who are very reluctant to allow their staff to assist other teams even when they have spare resource capacity and I could never see the value behind this approach, and at times helped people regardless.

Fortunately my current manager trusts me to use my judgement :)

Do not trust your colleagues/managers/etc. They are your coworkers, not your friends. Do your job to the best of your ability, but stay detached from your workplace and the people in it. Your loyalty will not be rewarded, you are expendable, they will stab you in the back and/or hang you out to dry. Stay loyal to your real friends instead, your family, and the people in your actual life. Work is not your life - don't make that mistake.

Have you been burned at work? If your anonymity is assured, and you name no names, please, do share your wisdom here.
Coworkers have been some of my best friends. People are already very detached from the people around them these days, so I don't particularly agree with consciously detaching from everyone at work where you spend a big chunk of your life. Seems like a recipe for sadness.

I think a better approach is for people to have a very high savings rate so that they become financially independent. Once someone has a lot of money saved up, then they have the freedom to go for periods of time between jobs if necessary, or take more risks, or focus more on job quality than compensation. Most people are on a financial treadmill with little or no savings, living paycheck to paycheck, and so getting screwed at work or fired can be a major life blow. But if someone saves up a lot, and doesn't build their identity based on what they currently do for a living, then a workplace setback or even a firing or layoff doesn't have to be a huge deal.

I detach from the fat lazy coworker who is just here for 'line calls'.
He has twenty yrs seniority and they just bought him a NEW cushioned chair.

Guess who is carrying the fat ***.......

and I'm several decades older.....
