It also helps to try taking some responsibility for things nominally beyond one's control.
One often has more power to change things & prevent strife than one might initially think.
Tis a shame it took me so long to learn that. But it sure worked for me.
I try to do this as well. If I see a problem has arisen or is going to arise and I'm in a position to resolve it or facilitate it being resolved I'll do so, even if it's not strictly my responsibility to do so. As long as you don't go too far and neglect your long term responsibilities in the process there is nothing wrong with doing this. I worked with some managers who are very reluctant to allow their staff to assist other teams even when they have spare resource capacity and I could never see the value behind this approach, and at times helped people regardless.
Fortunately my current manager trusts me to use my judgement
