Trolleybuses versus trams

As a child i liked going to Blackpool for a family day out. Back then they had the old trams, i enjoyed the rickety ride on one of them.
Now they've relaid the track and have new, more efficient, quiter qnd much smoother trams, not so much fun for me.

New and old.

Also during Blackpool illumination, you could take a tram ride along the promenade in a special tram to see the lights.

They have a few, here are a couple.

Trolley buses were a thing of the past in and around the area i lived though i believe there were a few town hanging on to them

This was 40 to 50 years ago

Belfast was the last place in the UK to get rid of trolleybuses, just before the OPEC crisis hit and made the replacement buses a lot more expensive.

When I lived in London, we had trolley buses for much of my early childhood. I can remember many times when they had to put the mechanism back on the wires when they had a problem - so not that impressed by them. I probably had a ride on one of the last trams in London - somewhere in the Acton area - and possibly done so because my parents knew they were all going out of service.

The above, what was commonly around when I was a child.

The last tram service above, and where I might (unlikely) be in the picture - aged about six then.

And the above, a tram in Wales, which my mother no doubt used quite a bit.

I think trams take the prize. o_O

I'm a great advocate for trams, living in Manchester (UK) where we have a good modern system.

I remember when they had such big plans for transportation, such as monorails, people movers, high-speed intercity trains. I even remember a sci-fi movie where they had high-speed underground sub-shuttles which went all over the world. Those trains in Logan's Run were pretty cool, too.

It's interesting when compared to communications and information technology (which have expanded exponentially in the past 50 years), transportation technology hasn't really gotten that far. Roads and railroads are basically the same as they've always been, except they're more expensive nowadays. Cars are still metal boxes on four rubber tires driving on pothole-strewn roads in heavy traffic jams which get worse and worse every year - along with the usual quota of deadly accidents. Railroads are also basically the same as well, including the deadly accidents.

Not sure about accidents with trams and trolleybuses, although I'm sure there must be some. Not just with the vehicles themselves, but with the electrical wires above the city streets.

Coconuts or footballs ... discuss.

I don't like the taste of coconuts. I've never tasted a football, although if they're made of pigskin, I wonder if you could make bacon out of one?

I would suggest that trolleybuses are a better solution for phasing out buses on environmental grounds. The caveat is that I would not go for trolleybuses with battery backup, as they slash the environmental benefits due to the lithium mining.

If you are planning a long-term solution and are willing to invest more for a more reliable system, switching to trams would be better.
