Government funds are sought after by private corporations because gov't funds typically have huge profit margins (low cost)
Look, if a private corporation can get us to Mars, they deserve the prizes of their endeavor.

Why is this news? Another distraction. Obama set this ball rolling a long time ago.

President Obama's Space Legacy: Mars, Private Spaceflight and More
Ahem... for those of us who actually read articles.
At the bottom of the article is the rather telling little snippet.
All of the above should be taken with a large grain of salt. It will probably take years to fully assess just how the Obama administration shaped U.S. spaceflight and exploration, partly because decisions made by the Trump administration and other future officeholders will affect that legacy.
That Trump is convening this group to chart future moves is a good sign, but no guarantee they will proceed on the Obama trajectory.

Correct! But let's remember that is being a part of the discussion is a positive thing. Maybe he wants to slow R&D down, speed it up, take it another direction, whatever. The point is that he is interested in moving forward. It is nice to hear good news.

I am shocked.
Shocked, I tell you!
Can you not see what Trump is up to?
Iron Sky.

Because the president has expressed interest in wishing to invest financially and politically into space travel. Having the support from the executive branch is a big deal.
To me, having this group helmed by someone who is so pathetically and stupidly anti-science is not evidence of solid support for space travel. Trump also took a stance against the TPP, but that doesn't/didn't make him pro-middle class.

Classic case of Pence envy.
I think Deuteronomy 14:8 and Leviticus 11:7 make is safe to assume Revoltingest may have been permanently scared away from Pence envy. I'm going to guess Pence probably does eat pork, but even hints and whispers of prohibiting Revoltingestan's most sacred and divine slice of culinary bliss is at least a +20 modifier against Pence envy.
