It appears that military are only a stop gap measure,
until the envisioned wall is in place.

I don't know the number of illegal immigrants here, but as one person said those immigrants should build the wall.

It is largely a dramatic gesture only. The military is very limited in the actions that they can take. They can't arrest or detain and they definitely can't fire their guns at illegal immigrants. What would you have them do?
Sure they can arrest & detain illegals caught crossing.

That's true. It's an international border well within military jurisdiction.

I heard otherwise. On FOX News. I was listening to Shepard Smith and he made that claim. This Washington Post article makes the same claim:

A very liberal source, judging by the ads. Though that does not make them wrong:

"During George W. Bush’s administration, in 2006, under Operation Jump Start, about 6,000 members of the National Guard from across the border region were sent to help Border Patrol agents. Because they weren’t allowed to work as law enforcement, they couldn’t arrest anyone.
Instead, they worked in support roles like monitoring cameras and building and repairing roads and fencing. The operation’s goal was to allow more Border Patrol agents to work in enforcement roles at the border and give the agency time to hire and train 6,000 new recruits by 2008, according to Customs and Border Protection."
It looks like the military can only take over some of the jobs of the border patrol and allow them to focus on training of more border control agents that do the actual arresting.

Again, how? One must have the legal right to arrest to do so. Can you find a source that supports your claim? I have found two that support mine besides my hearsay of Shepard Smith.
I observe that soldiers arrest & detain people in various conflicts.
