Trump's first speech to Congress

What did you all think of Trump's first speech to Congress?

I thought it was a good speech for President Trump. Less bleak (no American carnage) and more constructive.

While I still disagree with most of the things President Trump wants to do (or more specifically, how he wants to do them), there are some things I can get behind: Infastructure spending and bipartisan immigration reform. These things are long overdo, and now that we might have Republicans motivated to actually govern, rather than merely obstruct, we might get some things done.

Frazzled Democrat former Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear calls himself a Republican in his rebuttal speech, then corrects himself and says he's a Democrat.

Basically, his role was to come out after Trump's fantastic address to America last night to put on some antic with the theme "Howdy! Wez da Democrats, no we ain't that Nation of Islam and da like, wez just yur Country Bumpkins, good ol boys for the common folk, come on DOWN cause we got fried chicken here!"

... well ... he came off as a country bumpkin alright.

Now the DOW just hit 21,000 plus after Trump's speech. I think an expensive Indian restaurant is more the menu now, not KFC.

A lot of lies in his speech. Not sure why he's taking credit for lowering the price on F-35s? Just like all the other 'job' claims he said he saved. Bunch of BS when you look at the truth.

It's a better speech than his usual drivel. But the substance is still the same. Things are the worst ever and he's going to fix it all by transporting us back to a better time when white men were men and the world new we would nuke them if they messed with us.

I read about half the speech and found that most of his statements were either factually incorrect or taking credit for things that either haven't happened or would have happened without him.

It is going to be a long 4 years.

Aw I missed the rebuttal. Shame there wasn't an articulate response. Say what you want about him, but dang could Obama give a speech.

That is BS, and definitely Trump's MO. We gotta keep calling him on it. But remember, it's not exactly abnormal for president's to take credit for all sorts of stuff. At the end of the day, they are the figurehead. All the glory- and all the blame-- tends accumulate at the top.

Haven't had the time to look at it. If anyone has a cliff notes I can read over during lunch, I would appreciate it.

I have two caveats.

One, without Trump's tax returns, the details of infrastructure spending must come from Democrats, not from the White House. Until Trump releases his tax returns, and we understand the nature of his domestic and foreign holdings, we need to be sure that he isn't spending government money to enrich himself.

Two, Bipartisan Immigration reform was attempted by Obama many times. If Trump truly wants it, Democrats will not obstruct. The problem here is that his s message has been inconsistent. He also did not mention this potential policy change in the speech last night. I'm guessing he may be going for the Art of the Deal here. . . Which is ask for something ridiculous, then bargain back to relative sanity. We have to stick to our principals on our end, in either case.

Everything else was posturing and scoring cheap points. Soaring rhetoric is not results. . . And if this swings polls in his direction just because he used some words, then we're probably in deeper trouble than we think.

I do think that his assessment of the Iraq war and what we could have done with that money was spot on.

I've found my state of mind has been much more equanimous since avoiding the news altogether, and my life has not been negatively affected in any way being generally unaware of every important crisis (which all seem to come and go and be forgotten). I just don't feel any more informed by the news - at least not in any substantive or useful way. Your mileage may vary.

To me it seems, most news, and most people's interest in the news, amounts to little more than the desire for gossip. I can talk s*** about my friends girlfriend if I want to engage in that.

Yep, a lot of these things like immigration reform can have a lot of different meanings. There may be a bill enough democrats and republicans can agree on, but is that the plan Trump is talking about? Listening to his rhetoric, it seems doubtful.

I wonder who was his Goebbels this time (i.e. who wrote his speech). It sure wasn't him; it suits his ideology fine (such as it is), but it is far beyond his level of articulation and reason.

Hitler actually wrote a good 99% of his speeches. Goebbels' role as Propaganda Minister was to take the broad strokes or finer points of the speeches and make them mass-communicable as posters, paper articles, pamphlets, so on. Or, basically, Hitler is still more competent and better at his job than Trump.

And thank god for that.

I rather still have KFC or an Indian hole in the wall than an expensive restaurant.
