that the Establishment Clause of the First Admendmenthad acquired a well accepted meaning: it forbade establishment of a national religion and forebade preference among religious sects or denominations

I agree there should be no preference, if a judge wants to put up the code af hamarubi(or whatever its called) then let him/her too.

But some would not be so inclusive. Any single or even just a few specific (not generalized) displays would be contrary to established Constitutional law. The opening for abuse is tremendous.

A nation that lived by Christian principles would be a utopia.

In your opinion that is. I, for one, would not like a nation that lived by Christian principals. I mean, I'd like the peace and love, but not some of the other stuff. To be a utopia, all people would have to be amazingly happy with the system, hence, a Christian fundamental state has already proven to be non-utopian, as I wouldn't like it.

Based upon which interpretation? I have relatives who are extremely fundamentalist and believe that women and men have certain roles. They believe that God meant for women to stay at home and have babies and to submit to their husbands in all things. They wear dresses at all times and wear head coverings in public. They don't talk about it, but it wouldn't surprise me that they believe a woman is unclean for a period after child birth and during menstruation.

Utopian? Maybe if you're a white male.

Good say, Melody! One person's paradise is another person's hell. That's why utopia on earth cannot exist. Even Thomas Moore who wrote Utopia addressed this fact.
