British Court Issued Warrant for Former Israeli Minister

On Tuesday, Israel’s government reacted with anger to the news that last weekend a British court had issued a warrant for the arrest of Tzipi Livni, the opposition leader who was a member of the country’s war cabinet during its offensive in Gaza, over allegations of war crimes committed by Israeli troops. According to a report in The Guardian, “Westminster magistrates’ court issued the warrant at the request of lawyers acting for some of the Palestinian victims of the fighting, but it was later dropped,” after it became clear that Ms. Livni, who had previously been scheduled to speak in London, had canceled her visit to Britain. Ms. Livni’s office told Haaretz that the decision not to travel to Britain had been made before the warrant was issued, but The Jewish Chronicle, a London newspaper, reported, “She pulled out of the trip for fear of lawyers obtaining an arrest warrant.”

Gotta love the hypocrisy. British troops are in Afghanistan and Iraq. and a British court is after an Israeli opposition leader for an IDF operation in the Gaza strip. seems like some Brits can't get over that the British empire has ceased to exit.

Tayab Ali, the solicitor who tried to obtain a warrant for the arrest of Barak on behalf of 16 Palestinians, said his firm was
"ready, willing and able to act for clients to seek the arrest of anyone suspected of war crimes" who travelled to the UK.

anyone? or just Israelis? legal aid? i wonder?

LONDON (AP) — Britain is vowing to curtail a peculiar legal power that lets judges order the arrest of visiting politicians and generals — a threat currently focused on Israeli visitors that, one day, might be invoked against Barack Obama or Vladimir Putin.

now Putin, that would be interesting.

What I don't understand is why British courts would even agree to hear cases that are outside their jurisdiction. What is with that?

Wow. How about Britain returning all those Chechen criminals that are live in England while having warrants in Russia for terrorism?

or other criminals who are under investigation in Russia for stealing billions of dollars, who currently live in Britain.

Its not "Britain" its the legal system if someone was to present the case to court then i am sure the system would kick in . but you need that "someone" this was a political showboat.

Done here.
That would certainly qualify as a half-baked idea, imo.
I have mixed feelings. I like the idea of a Pinochet or a Bush being liable to arrest wherever he goes, but I think the Livni case shows that it's being seriously abused. There's a legitimate argument to be made in favor of the Gaza offensive -- really, I don't see what choice the Israelis had in that case. And supporting a legitimate offensive doesn't, to my mind, make you culpable for every crime committed during that offensive.

What does that has to do with the topic at hand? why are you so defensive when it comes to Israel? can't you be objective even once when dealing with this topic? why are you attacking the *Brits*? why don't you ask first why they have issued such a warrant and analyze whether it was fair or not?

You reminded me of a very smart man who said to a Muslim in another thread ...

Why cant you take any criticism without breaking down?

Indeed, Gotta love the hypocrisy.

It was a cynical propaganda stunt taking advantage of defect in British law. To ask if it was 'fair' is ludicrous, particularly given the absence of arrest warrants for the leadership of Hamas and Hezbullah.
