You do realise he is being sarcastic, right? That’s a load of rhetorical manure that doesn’t bode well for your ability to rationally assess anything in this area.

No, because there was absolutely nothing in the OP to suggest any attempt at sarcasm. Either way, it wasn’t a constructive opening for the thread. You do realise he is being sarcastic, right?
Sarcasm doesn't need to be suggested. Americans just don't get itNo, because there was absolutely nothing in the OP to suggest any attempt at sarcasm. Either way, it wasn’t a constructive opening for the thread.
True, but I’m British.Sarcasm doesn't need to be suggested. Americans just don't get it

Toning it down was probably a mistake because as written it’s pretty much exactly what a disturbing number of people appear to actually believe and it isn’t a million miles away from your opinion of the actual policy you were commenting on. That’s why the sarcasm didn’t come across.@Rival 's right that it's sarcasm (and I toned the OP down significantly from what I originally had in mind).
I’d suggest that discouraging people from engaging in terrorism, in the Middle East or here, would be a good thing. It isn’t possible to control peoples thoughts, only provide the information those thoughts are based on and there doesn’t seem to be anything here to suggest the information being presented by the government organisations was inappropriate. There were some valid questions raised regarding some of the methodology and secrecy but no obvious answers on how to achieve the same ends without them. When I wrote the OP It seemed self-evident that this was a distrubing entry of the state into trying to control people's thoughts, but it seems many people are comfortable with it- which is admittedly unexpected.
