Actually, I think it is the 'R' they cannot pronounce. I believe my granddaughter's name is Ruka, but it sounds like Luka when it is said.  るか -Google translates this as: Ru ka. Then, of course, they don't have an 'L' in their writing system, but why fuss over details. This is why they cannot say Rice with the 'r' sound. Instead most can only say 'Lice' for rice. Have a very long experience with Japanese, or 'have a niece' as I say to myself when I feel foolish.
