Not to imply that the situation in Syria isn't difficult and complex, but I take it that you approve of those soldiers' refusal?

I do believe that the USA has a dreadful habit of picking sides based on greed and ideology. I agree with you about that.
But I don't see a lot of difference with the other major players.

The acts on grounds tells, USA supported rebels (which most of them terrorists), and protect them in some areas.

For what it's worth, its not the general populous who decides who are friends and enemies for the day. Much rather see a cessation to hostilities and involvement from an offensive standpoint and return to a proactive role of peacekeeping.

Historically, I've always taken the USA never got involved unless upon request for assistance, or if attacked first.

It's still kind of surreal to see so much world respect and credibility lost now this day and age. Something went horribly wrong since then, and the leadership refuses to level with the public in general as to why exactly this destabilization continues.

Well oil is a contender that motivates givin the value as an energy source, but I don't suspect its as simple as that.

I'm still not that familiar enough concerning benefits or disadvantages concerning Israel, although it seems to me it plays a tactical role in the area from a demographic standpoint, as well as does its religious significance among those who follow Abrahamic faiths.
