dear mocha radha ,

I can speak only from the vaisnava perspective , when we take initiation we acknowledge our servitude and devote ourselves to service of the lord acknowledging the lord to be supreme , within each vaisnava that service attitude will differ dependant on that devotes understanding of the lord , similarly there are non initiates allso who realise that subordinate position and who serve the lord in their hearts with love and devotion .in most cases the idea of servitude is one of love and reverence .

I canot comment from a muslim perspective , but I think it would be fair to say that an extreme veiw might occur anywhere . I have met both muslims and christians that share a deep love of god in a similar way to a vaisnava holding god to be supreme and themselves to be subordinate with out the need to enter in to what are concidered extreme , or extremeist veiws .

servitude is very much a part of ones personal relationship with god , the attitude one takes when aproaching god , one of humility and reverence .

of course i only used muslims as an examples . i know the hindu view of god is often different from that of the abrahamic faiths

I have no opinion on the Muslim image of a "Slave to Allah" to the extent that such beliefs do not harm people.

As a Vaishnavi I view it quite differently. My service to the Lord is like how I serve my dearest friend. I make sure my closest friends are well taken care of. I think about them often, love them very much, and tell others what good people they are. Similarly I share everything of who I am with them and they do likewise. My relationship with Sriman Narayana is like this and so much more.

Service to the supreme comes in many forms and ultimately at the heart of it, the true service is in realizing we are His and He is our's. The recognition of our true position and returning to him is the greatest form of service.

Aum Hari Aum!

Service to the Lord is also doing work or service in His name; offering your work or service for others to Him.

Sri Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita 9.27 "O son of Kunti! Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer in sacrifice, whatever you give as charity, whatever austerity you perform - do that as offering unto Me."

so we serve god by serving others

Yes, that's my take on it. Even Jesus said "whatever you do for the least of these, you do for me" Matthew 25:40.

Muslims have a specific view of God as their 'king' and they as slaves who must follow his law.

Vaishnavas see God as Love, we are servants of Love and our purpose is to cultivate love and devotion, not just to God but to all as we are all part of God.
Vaishnavas also believe that individuals have unique relationships with God. We can see him as a son, a brother, a father, a king, a lover etc. and in each instance, we serve Him in that capacity.

Service for a Vaishnava is not about following commands. It is about loving with all our heart.

We absolutely serve God by serving others.

We are all part of God, so when we help others we help God and each other.

whatever you do for the least of these, you do for me

There is a lot of wisdom to be found in other scriptures but yes, you do have to cherry-pick (my fingers are permanently stained red :D). Odion can tell you the beauty of passages in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhs; any of the Buddhists can speak of the wisdom from Sutras. I think it was the Buddha who said that one candle can light a thousand other candles, yet the light from that one candle is not diminished. I think the interpretation is that happiness is never diminished by sharing it. I extend that to doing good works... pay it forward.
