(Variation of ' What's In A Name' thread) Do you have any famous/ infamous ancestors?

I was just noticing the interesting posts being made about peoples' ancestors. I wondered how many people here have interesting stories about their ancestors. (Or people they think they might be related to... I shouldn't limit it to people who are familiar with their family.)

Pah and I have been discussing that we are descendants of several people who came over on the Mayflower, Soule, Standish and Alden. It would be interesting to have some DNA tests done.

I think my great, great, (great?), grandfather shot some general in the civil war... I don't think the general was that important though, because I can't recall his name. They did show a 'reenactment' of it (guy walking next to a fence and shot the general on his horse) on the history channel one time, so maybe...

I have no clue who I am realted to that came over on the Mayflower. My Aunt was doing a geneology project for my dad's side of the family but did nto give me names of any ancestors.

On my moms' side, from the Morrison clan, I've got the blind Scottish poet (I'm sure he must've had a name, it's just that whenever I see him referred to, it's as 'a blind poet') that recorded the adventures of William Wallace. I don't think he 'counts' as famous, but my great-great (however many greats) uncle was Charles Kingsley, who wrote "Water Babies." And my maternal grandpa helped to perfect the air conditioner! Errr... I'm more 'boastful' of that during the summertime.

In studying geneology, I've been able to trace back my paternal line to Sir Robert Lawrence, whose claim to 'fame' was having been in the Crusades and thus aquired Ashton Hall for awhile. I think he probably falls under 'infamous', because that implies he killed enough people to gain recognition.

I don't really know of any direct famous ancestors, but my lineage includes, at some point, Geronimo and Cochise.

My mother's cousin is Yvonne De Carlo. She had another actress cousin who appears briefly in the first GODFATHER movie in the wedding scene.

An ancestor of mine is Admiral John Jervis, Earl of St.Vincent, who served in the British Royal Navy and a was friend of Admiral Nelson. He was the Commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean in 1795 and blockaded the French at Toulon; he also defeated the Spanish in 1797 off the Cape of St.Vincent. From 1801-4 he was the First Lord of the Admiralty and reduced corruption in the administration of the Navy by introducing what are described as 'ruthless' reforms. At one point he even served on the famous HMS Victory.

Both Lightkeeper and I have a John Alden, son of John Alden of the Mayflower who was convicted, in the Salem witch trials, of being a witch. He escaped and hid out for 3 years or so, coming back to "justice" when things cooled down. He was subsequently exhonorated.

For me, I am a descendant of Geoffry Jocelyn whose brother, Gilbert, was St. Gilbert of Semperingham, founder of the Order of Gilbertines, canonized in 1202 by Pope Innocent III.

So two famous or notable uncles for me although rumrors abound about governors and Civil War Generals.

In the Revolutionary War several in my direct line served - Gamaliel Bates, Abraham Josselyn (the same line as Geoffry noted above) and Thomas Stetson. Hehehe - I am a Son of the American Revolution (though I don't belong to the organization).

Keeper of the Grove
Surname: Mac Aoidgh

Mottos: "Manu Forti" (With a Strong Hand), "Bi Tren, Bi Treun" (Be True, Be Valiant), "Verk Visly and Tent to Ye End" (Work Wisely and Look to the Outcome).

Battle Cry: Bratach Bhan Chlann Aoidh (The White Banner of Mac Aoidgh)

Clan History: 1) Around 710 A.D., three separate tribes leave Ireland from a region known as Dalriada and land in what is now known as Argyll and the southern Hebrides. One of the tribes is known as the C'nel Lorne, the progenitors of Clann MacAoidh. The C'nel Lorne are descended from Aedh, grand-son of the Irish king N'iall. 2) Around the year 1100 A.D., the C'nel Lorne move up the Great Glen (the Loch Ness divide) to the present day region of the Moray after centuries of battle with the C'nel Gabhrain. The Mac Aedh (then Gaelic spelling...) left in Argyll become a later war sept of the Clan Ranald of McDonald, later known as the "Lords of the Isles". 3) The Mac Aedh/Mac Aed/Mac Heths (all variations of the Gaelic pronunciation of the time) become a virtual separate kingdom around the Moray Firth on Scotland's middle north eastern coast, becoming known as the "Mormaers", or Great Rulers (of Men). However, in the 1200's their power was broken after the grandson of MacBeth, by virtue of Lulach (or Gormflaith) his wife, challenged one of the early Scottish kings. The Mormaers were banished over the far northwestern Munros (Mountains) into the region of the Strathnaver. 4) The Strathnaver at the height of the Clann MacAoidgh (modern Gaelic spelling) stretched from Assynt in the west to Loch Naver, to the borders of Ross-shire and just west of present day Thurso. From late 1200s until the middle 1400s, the power of the Aoidgh was unchallenged particularly after the battle of Drum na Cub in the shadow of Ben Loyal, when Iain Abrach Mackay led a party of 500 men into battle againt men of the Sutherland (Clann Suderland). Some 1500 Suderlands were killed, virtually the entire war group. These Suderlands were NOT related to the later infamous Sutherlands of the Clearances of the 1800's. 5) Throughout the 1500s and 1600s the Clann Aoidgh was under constant pressure from the Gordon-Huntly Clann (later assuming the name Sutherland by royal decree) throuch fractricidal policies. The Chiefs of Mackay always backed the Crown and WERE NOT at anytime Jacobites. ONLY those whom remained as septs of the Clan MacDonald were Jacobites. The famous Mackay's Regiment came into being in the middle 1600's, fighting as mercenaries in Holland and Germany for William the Orange. In 1688, the Chief of Mackay through his support behind William fully, thus ending the House of Stewarts reign as Kings of Scotland and England. 6) The Clann Mac Aoidgh declined throughout the 18th and 19th century due to the avarice of the Suitherland's, a failure of land reform policy of the newly united "Kingdom", and the lure of America. 7) In the year 1999 in Sutherland County, which comprises one-quarter of the original "Strathnaver", there are only 2,126 inhabitants. In 1825 at the beginning of the worst years of the "Clearances", there were 26,245 inhabitants. Some 76 percent were blood relation Mackay's and were Gaelic language speakers as their ancestors had been for 2000 years.

Famous relations: King Niall of Ireland, King David of Scotland, Macbeth, as well as a veritable legion of Barons, Lords, and Knights. Also, probably most interesting of all, is that Clan Mac Aoidgh is descended from Morrigun, of Clan Mhoirgunn, an almost mythical person.

Generally, the most correct ones are the first two, and the last one.

I'm supposed to be one of the hundreds of many-great grandchildren of Cochise, who was an Apache chief. However, a variation of the story in my family goes that we're related to Jeronimo. There are literally factions on my mother's side who believe one or the other... nobody seems to really know for sure, lol, including me.

Not really sure about my ancestors. I know I had a great great aunt who was a huge influence in the underground againts the Nazis in Italy. But further back I'm not sure. My last name Bernardo supposedly comes from an ancient royal family in Bologna or something like that. But on my mother's side, I may be descendant from the Italian Gypsy Carrozzoni family. It would make sense being that my mothers maiden name is Carrozza. This is where I believe my gypsy shamanistic traits come from. Other than that, nobody famous.
