Vatican creates office to "fight secularization"

VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI is creating a new Vatican office to fight secularization and "re-evangelize" the West — a tacit acknowledgment that his attempts to reinvigorate Christianity in Europe haven't succeeded and need a new boost.
...
The new pontifical council, he said, would "promote a renewed evangelization" in countries where the Church has long existed "but which are living a progressive secularization of society and a sort of 'eclipse of the sense of God.'"

Is secularization what is wrong with society?

No. Secularism is in all ways superior to theocracy.

The Pope is just whining because he doesn't have the "civilized" world in a vice as his predecessors did.

"Secular", in this context, means religiously neutral.

A secular society protects the rights of each and every religious person as well as those that have no religion.

A secular society also doesn't allow a church, or the vatican, the power they once enjoyed which is why, I believe, they fight so strongly against secular ideals.

Whats wrong with this situation is that the leadership of the Vatican thinks the 'solution' is to evangalize and to 'fight' secularization, its as if the Vatican is a dying old puritan in a vibrat continent which has been on the secular path for a long time now, and this dying man's solution is preaching to people who have long rejected Church dogma the tenets of the faith they have rejected and that has caused them so much suffering.
I've seen some dellusional outbursts from the Vatican in dealing with this and with their dark history, strange things such as absolving the Jews of the death of the Christian savior in the last decades, as if the Jews are in need of the Church's forgivness, the same Church which has killed countless Jews, or the dellusional public declaration of the Vatican that it does not rule out the existence of aliens, as if to stay in the spotlight of all that is hype.
tragic, and sad. the Vatican holds one of the most important treasuries of information in its archives, and it still remains closed to the public at large, and what we get instead is the decaying of what was the leading religious force in Europe, and perhaps the world.

Evidently the pope doesn't realise that Secularism is far more Catholic friendly than the majority of theocracies out there. Then again I guess he's just dreaming of bringing back the dark ages.

Papa Ratso shows his true face once again. The former Nazi has proven that not only is he a fascist, he's apparently also a dhimmi. His views aren't actually too far removed from that of the Iranian theocracy or the Taliban, and that makes him more or less an appeaser.

If the the Pope were a true Christian, he would be worried more about Islamization than secularization.

Sorry, we're all still aware of all the sexual predators in the church, and the church's efforts to cover-up and facilitate their abuse. Try again.

I hate to sound ignorant, but what exactly is secularism? I am a theist and I follow Jesus. My faith is the most important thing in my life, BUT, I also live in the real world. I watch movies, listen to music, etc. that has nothing to do with my faith. Jesus told most of His disciples to stay at home, and only a few (The Apostles) to go and "spread the word" so to speak. Even theists have to mix religion/faith with the secular world or they have to hide in a cave (and no, not a literal cave, just a figure of speech).

Secularism means religiously neutral. For example a government that is secular does not favor or promote any particular faith. Some people would try to lead you to believe that secularism mean anti-religious, which is false.

Right on the money. :)

Christine, secularism is, in essence, freedom of conscience. It means the government has no right to meddle with your faith. That said, "meddling" includes promotion.

Basically, how or whether you pray is your own business and nobody else's.

No, but the failure to achieve complete secularization is part of what's wrong with society.

Western democracies ought to regard the Pope's efforts as they would regard the efforts of any other theocratic dictatorship to interfere in the domestic politics of their countries.
Interesting notion Bill.

The Vatican is an independent state that is both theocratic and a dictatorship. I wonder why people forget that.
Because it is some kind of sacred cow to many. I guess politicians in Europe still remember with awe the days in which the Church's agenda moved whole states.

I know nothing about fighting secularism. All I want is to be able to follow my faith. I can't dictate to others what they should do about faith (if they have it). And I want to be able to follow my faith without any kind of abuse or harassment, which I have NEVER experienced, to my knowledge. As far as I know, that is really what people want.

Then you're a secularist, presuming you think everyone else should have the same freedom. :)

Christine, Im not sure that anyone attacks normal people who happen to be Christians, I think the main issue is that mega Churches still try to preach their dogma in the 21 century.
