Vegetarians: What's Your Diet?

Vegetarian is just a useful label. Use anothet one...flexitarian.
Your body, your diet, your choice.

Flexitarian... I like it. :) I'm going to start exploring lower carb veg options. I can use something like myfitnesspal to track macros to make sure I don't get carb-crazy.

It's not hypocracy. It's trying your best in a complex world, as per your own personal circumstances.

I suppose you're right... it's a matter of minimizing harm and ill effects. I know it's certainly far from a perfect world. Someone once wrote that living causes death somewhere, somehow. You must know by now I tend to over-think things.

That sounds like the quote I read.

Query: does using animal products such as leather, while eschewing consuming animals make one a hypocrite? I've fidoodled over attempting a proper vegetarian diet (preferably lower carb due to insulin resistance) several times. I am not concerned about getting enough vitamins, minerals or protein, and I think I could make it work with planning. But I have too much invested in leather... jackets, boots, gloves. I won't make any excuses for it, leather is far more utilitarian for outerwear than anything made of cloth or wool, and will most likely always use leather.

Most vegetarians would say that they key is to not get any new leather products.

acknowledge that to exist means to be guilty of murder. from guilt comes confession. from confession comes repentance. from repentance comes a firm determination to reudce my murderous ways.

I call myself a vegetarian. I have leather shoes, belts, wallets and probably unwittingly consume animal byproducts regularly. It's probably unavoidable. Recently found out waxed lemons are 'waxed' with bug **** and plastic...

thisis a problem for me too.
Although as a Gaudia Vaisnava, we should avoid all slaughterhouse by-products such as leather there are so many hidden uses, you will find animal by-products in soaps cosmetics and many foods, and as you say in wax to coat lemons andglycerine is used in a coating to make cucumbers shiny!

unfortunately it is everywhere, especialy in a western consunerised lifestyle.

I avoid all comercialy produced cosmetics, shampo, cleaning products, we buy indian ayavedic soap and use natural materials to make our own skin care products, I have dry skin so I realy need this but it is so easy to make creams and cleansers with natural materials like coconut oil and herbal extracts.

I dont think a lot of vegetarians give a second thought to what they wash and condition their hair with or use every day on their skin.

When it comes to the question of leather we have had this debate many times. In India it was deemed permissable to use the skin of a dead animal, but not to slaughter one specificaly for its use, so to use slaughter house by-products is wrong as the animal is born with the intention that it should be killed, it is treated as a commodity, this is wrong.

My problem is that here it is difficult to find good non leather shoes for winter it is the one place where I break the rule, in summer it is a little easier I found some briliant rope soled sandals :) My problem is that I dislike the use of plastics and non bio-degradable materials and boycot synthetics on the grounds that they are so damaging to the environent.

So I have leather boots for winter but I avoid any un nececary leather items like belts and wallets, and I make them last. I dont think I should waste these things if i have to buy them.

The other big argument is Silk ? Do I buy Silk for the deities ? Should we give pearls to Radha and Krsna ? Personaly I only wear Cotton, Wool, and other natural fibres but I have some old silk saris which I was given, but to throw them away would be equaly wastefull now that they exist.

I agree entirely we must each do what we can when we can, it is the only way.

Made a treat yesterday - club sandwich with fake chicken and bacon. It's not something I recommend eating on a daily basis but it sure eliminated my meat craving. It was so good!

On another note, while not related to food, the last poster reminded me of another aspect of vegetarianism, cosmetics. I use stuff from Lush, a company known in the UK. Their stuff is vegetarian and some is vegan but I wanted even more natural than that...

So I've been giving soapnuts a go for washing clothes and myself. My skin gets so soft and clean from it plus I don't feel as itchy. The soap bar has only two ingredients, olive oil and soapnut. :D I think for washing clothes, it's best to get some essential oil, like orange or tea tree for added sent and freshness. I made the mistake to not get any.

In any case, it seems good so far.

just a small thought , be carefull with orange and citrus family oils they can be very astringent for sencitive skin , orange oil opens the pores and can allmost sting .

a freind gave me some lush soaps for christmas they were good , a little highly coloured and extremely perfumed but they were very nice , good to find safe vegetarian / vegan soaps :)

I used to make my own soaps and creams there is a cold soaponification process I want to try out in the summer so am looking forward to that .

Each person has different diet buy according to me everyone should take care of few things like:Drink plenty of water or other calorie-free beverages,Think about what you can add to your diet, not what you should take away.and Be choosy about nighttime snacks

I found giving up meat to be much easier than I expected. If you're looking for nutritional advice, I recommend the book "Becoming Vegetarian" by Melina and Davis.

As for what I eat, I'm pretty lazy about cooking, so I do more pre-packaged convenience foods than I probably should. I do cook at least once or twice per week, usually in large enough quantities to get 3-4 meals out of it. It works out well, because I live alone, so I'm just cooking for myself.

I've done it in the past, and am doing it now. I start with not eating anything with 4 legs and mammary glands. I think it's been at least a couple of days so far, and it really doesn't bother me. Turkey is easy to give up because I really don't care for it; chicken is a little harder; fish and other seafood is going to be really hard. It's not that a chicken or a turkey is any less sentient than any other animal, but it seems easier to start with mammals.
