Umm, okay! So it doesn't mean it's food that's been blessed by a Rabi? :biglaugh:
Yes, this is what I was told.
thanks for picking up the slack while i was away aqualung

as far as i know kosher food is not food blessed by a Rabbi.
it is food from a kosher animal (such as cows, chickens, lamb, etc.) that has been slaughtered in a Kosher manner (there are laws governing how one should slaughter an animal) and then prepared in a kosher manner (i.e. no cheeseburgers)

that's kosher foods in a nutshell

mmm kosher food, half the food at twice the price:D

Okay, so now that I seem completely ignorant on the subject...just how do you "slaughter" an animal in a "kosher" manner? I am not trying to be weird about this, I'm just truley curious. :D

The religious tradition I identify with advocates lacto-vegetarianism. Personally, though, I have little respect for "tradition" and my reasons for eschewing animal products are my own.

All I know is that the machines you slaughter the meat with can't have touched dairy, so they don't mix. I don't know about anything else. I keep getting the Muslim restrictions mixed up in my mind, so now I don't want to say anything, in case it's just a Muslim thing.

For the LDS members on the forum: There was a speaker during General Conference, March 1996, who came down hard on those who interpreted the Word of Wisdom to imply they should be a vegetarian. I don't remember who was speaking, one of the Seventy me thinks.

I never implied that it should be that way, I never took it that way. :) I'm just wondering LDS members think about the WOW and vegetarianism.

There are no specific dietary requirements in Libraism, but it is generally considered bad form to put anyone down for eating meat.

My son (three) loves all vegetables except peas. I've no idea why he hates them so much but you couldn't force feed him them if you tied him down. He appears to absolutely despise meat, though. He almost looks happier during the fasts and we keep joking that he's going to grow up to be a monk!

I hate peas too...i think it's the texture that I hate, because i like them fresh and i like split pea soup.

I love meat. I tried to do the vegetarian thing once and I think I made it a day or two. It's too big of a temptation. :)

I have a question for all. What does your faith think about vegetarianism? Does it look down upon it, is it breaking any rules, have any of you ever been a vegetarian. Also, for the LDS people, do you think it's against the Word of Wisdom to be a vegetarian.
I actually have a tremendous amount of respect for vegetarians, particularly for those whose choice is based upon their value for animal life. My son is pretty much a vegetarian, although he does eat fish. He also eats dairy products. I don't eat much red meat. I'd say I have beef about once a month. Mostly, I eat chicken and seafood. I definitely don't think that vegetarianism could be seen as being against the Word of Wisdom. It's probably more in line with the W of W than the way most people eat. I've considered giving up red meat entirely, but every now and then I'm in the mood for it. If I had some really good vegetarian recipes, I might actually give it a try.

Proud to be a Sinner.
Religiously i believe nothing should be wasted and the animal or plant should be put through as little pain as possible.
I personally want to farm some goats and learn how to butcher/skin/etc them myself.
Dairy, meat, wool, leather, fertilizer.
Even sell the skulls to people.

To Save A Lamb
When I was a vegetarian (for about 8 years, I was a pescetarian for a latter part of it) I was Weak Christian then agnostic. So there wasn't really any religious anything about it or anything my religion said about it. When I was about 9 I decided I didn't want animals to suffer just so I could have a steak, so had my mom take me to the library and made us learn about vegetarianism. XD

But my health is actually pretty terrible and I'm anemic no matter what I eat- so I tried my best to get a good veggie diet in America- and I did pretty well. But now that I am in Brasil I don't have that much control over what is eaten- and it's usually mostly meat. (I'm dying for a good salad.) So I just eat everything and hope for the best- if I was still a vegetarian here I would be living on my iron pills, vitamins, and rice. So yes, when I return to America it will be back to a veggie life for me.

I'll echo what john313 and Maize said, compassion and respect for all life- and add I would love to try Maize's chili!
