Verse 5:32 - Is it addressed only to the children of Israel?

5:32 of the Quran says that if anyone slew a person, it would be as if he slew the whole people and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Why does this verse start with "On that account" and why does it say "We ordained for the children of Israel". I shall be thankful if someone explained this verse and its context.
 
I believe the majority of people believe it is for all times now. Usually the Qur'an doesn't talk about something unless we can learn from it today.

Thanks. I was wondering why the verse says, "We ordained for the children of Israel". Are Muslims considered the children of Israel? Are there other verses in the Quran where such a phrase is used?

I have never heard Muslims be called as the Children of Israel (Bani Israeel)
But I do know that those that followed the Prophets of the Torah were called the Children of Israel.

Im not sure if its the majority , but many scholars believe that the rules on previous nations mentioned in Quran, are to be applied by us as well unless theres another Islamic ruling contradicting it , contradicing is not the right word, the word in arabic is naskh which means the previous ruling has been changed by the new one, or the new one is a continuation of the previous one. ( Hope the sentence was correctly structured lol)

There are other verses which talks about chidlren of Israel and what they were ordained to do , some are specific to precised times such as the verse stating that Allah azza wajjal ordained Banu Israel to say Hitta ( i.e Oh ALlah forgive our sins) when they entred the door of a city ( Im not sure if its Jerusalem), but they changed it to another word.

So here the order is specific while in the verse youve mentioned it is general for chlidren of Israel at that time and for Muslims back in the time of the prophet pbuh and nowadays/

this is my understanding of it as well (but my knowledge is pretty limited) :eek:
